« Marshall AVT-100 Combo »

Published on 12/08/02 at 15:00
I acquired this amp at Mars Music during their closing sale for $479, 20% off street price of $599. My wife told me to find my Christmas present, so I told her I'd save her money if I bought it now. I always wanted a Marshall for the build and tone possibilities.

The AVT-100 has 3 adjustable channels, clean, OD1, and OD2, all footswitchable. The 16 effects are switchable in/out from the LED indicator footswitch as well, so it's easy to tell what's on or off before hitting a string. The variety of tones are great from serious OD fuzz to clean, then everything in between. I run my Strat, Tele, or Steinberger through it, but have yet to try my Alvarez acoustic. They all sound fantastic! I cranked it to 5 and was shaking stuff in my basement. This summer I'll take it outside and give it a real test!

Some of the 16 digital effect are useful, but you can't combine them. There is 1 effect that combines delay and chorus, but that's it. The flanger effect doesn't seem to have much range. If they could remove some of the many reverb settings and allow users to create their own combinations and save them as 'user settings', that would be useful! In the meantime, I'll use my pedals.

It is solid and it shows by it's 60 pounds of mass! I don't intend on gigging with it as I'd be too afraid of dropping it and banging it up, but it feels like it could take the abuse. I haven't found a flaw in the appearance. The build-in fan keeps it cool. The footswitch is all metal.

My '64 Princeton Blackface was my only prcatice amp before being joined by the Marshall. And if I thought I REALLY needed it, I would have bought a Marshall Halfstack, but the AVT-100 Combo fits my needs... and then some. Besides, I don't need to get THAT loud playing at church! I will buy another Marshall, someday. Maybe when they make the effects 'user' settable. I'd give it a 5 for the build quality, sound, and even the name, but the effects are better left to a pedal board, so I dropped it to a 4. But, buy this amp!
