Hydrogen has changed since the last notice, but it is always offered as standard, in the current version with Linux distributions musical: ubuntustudio, Fedora CCRMA, Tangostudio, KXstudio and others.
The installation depends solely that of the distribution: usually no problem.
Version 0.9.5 does not exist on Windows, the site advises to take the 0.9.6 beta, I have not tested.
Incompatibilities: yes with some sound drivers but if you use Hydrogen is obviously rather with Jack sound server real time / multi / multi-instruments, and generally it works well when the sound card supports. Less well with the original sound cards, portable ordis for example.
The manual is clear and sufficient, we can have fun right away and listen to the demos shipped with. There are also discussion forums, unfortunately often in English.

SUITABILITY/PERFORMANCE

I use several ordis, an old Toshiba laptop, a fixed dual-core HP, NEC Powermate is a departure for the office, a Sony Vaio dual processor X64. This works on all without trouble on Linux distribution.
Performance is always the same: we open a drum set, with samples at several velocity levels, and it is a piece that can last I do not know how many steps (I never got to the end).
And it turns, possibly multi-output, a stereo track for each instrument so far about 35 stereo outputs.
I once tried to add instruments, I can not remember how much it is limited, but the sets are offered well below the maximum in general.
We can also make his drumkit at home, more responsible than the proposed standards. Or drumkits.
There is obviously an internal mixer with effects possible (but not LADSPA VST only, which covers quite a lot already.
The output can go into multitrack sequencer in the same way and enjoy the effects and management of individual tracks and / or do u nbus percussion / drums to manage all tracks. (Eg Reaper). This touches on issues of Linux or other sequencer, at worst you can export the mix to sound files, or record such as multitrack Qtractor and to export a multiple.
Question rhythms, I feel it's enough to make: measures 1 to 12 or 20 times, fractions (quavers multicroches etc..), Triplets, all of which can coexist within the same song, or sequences that can be superimposed: this is how we can make patterns by hand left, right, left foot, right example to simulate a human drummer, and superimpose various movements to the same extent if we are to avoid incongruities or reproduce a real drummer, and then superimpose the tools to simplify the visualization of the rhythms.

OVERALL OPINION

I've had it about a year in this version I think.
I tried the free or demo versions of other drum machines, some easier to deal with but limited, others more complex.
I found a good level for a freeware.
What I love most? The price of course, when you're not a drummer, we did not want to pay a fortune for an instrument which can not play, then we put the minimum.
But also the ability to get into multitrack and manage each individual instrument's drumkit.
The least: when I plant and I have already exported 35 tracks in my sequencer, and I have to redo everything for a half measure damn bad. But hey, it does not seem possible to consider hydrogen as a plug-in to date, nor for the near future.
Value: Unbeatable for free! It deserves at least a try.
With experience, I would do this choice, unless I had € 800 to put in a plug-in in VST multitrack instead of putting them in a guitar.
