« A Full-blown overdrive pedal. »

Published on 07/05/11 at 09:32
The Fulltone Fulldrive II is an overdrive pedal with a Boost button for additional overdrive gain. This pedal is hand wired and completely analog.

UTILIZATION

This is an easy to use pedal with a multitude of tonal options. There are four knobs; Level, Tone, Drive and Boost. These control the volume of the pedal, the tone, the amount of drive, and the amount of Boost drive, respectively. The two footswitches on the pedal turn the pedal on and off and engage the Boost function, which does not work independently of the regular overdrive section. There is also a 3-way, miniature toggle switch to select one of three modes. The first is the Comp-Cut mode, which makes the pedal more of a clean boost. In this mode you get less gain, but way more volume output from the Fulldrive. The next is Vintage mode, which delivers a traditional Tube Screamer tone with a slight bump in mids. The final mode is the FM, or flat mids. This mode has the tonal characteristics of the Vintage mode but without the mid bump giving it a flatter EQ curve.

SOUND QUALITY

I used the Fulldrive II with a Gibson Les Paul Custom and several different amps, including a Marshall JCM 800 2x12 50 watt combo, a Laney LC50-II, and a Fender Super Reverb. In most cases I was using the Fulldrive as a boost to an already distorted tone, but I have also used the pedal as my stand alone overdrive tone. I would set the pedal differently for each scenario and in both cases the pedal performed amazingly well.

OVERALL OPINION

My favorite thing about the Fulldrive II is the versatility of the pedal. I have owned several overdrive pedals and this is by far the best. It is capable of so many different tones it is truly an indispensable tool for any guitar rig.
