I have found the MPX16 to be useless when used as a sampler because the sampled output is not the same as the original. I now use it as a MIDI controller for my hardware synths. The pads are good and it has a standard MIDI output as well as being able to assign note numbers to each of the pads without using a computer. Because of this, I think that the MPX16 is worth the money as a MIDI controller. However, it does not send CC numbers which I don't need anyway.

If you want to hear for yourself, I have attached three audio files.

The first audio file "Original" is the original sample.

The second audio file "Recorded onto SD Card" is the recording of the sample onto the SD card inserted into the MPX16. This is the sample after it has passed through the A/D converters and input circuitry.

The third audio file "Played through Output" is the recorded sample on SD card played back through the main outputs of the MPX16. This is what you would hear after you assign the sample to a pad on the MPX16 and then strike the pad. The sample in this case has passed through both the A/D and D/A converters and output circuitry.

The output of the MPX16 was connected to the line input of a Zoom Q3HD camcorder. The third file was taken from an SD card inserted into the Q3HD. I believe the Q3HD records quality audio through its line input.

It is quite clear that the MPX16 distorts the sound BOTH when passing through its A/D converters and its D/A converters, making it useless unless you like to produce lo-fi music.

The sound I hear when recorded onto the SD card AND when played back through its outputs is not satisfactory for me. I now use a Volca Sample to do the sampling which does not distort the sound.

UTILIZATION

A disaster. I wanted to replace my old mpx16 with akai s20 as sampler 'performance' that is, for use in live, playing samples in hand and enjoy the choke functions, loop, one shot etc ... Or these functions are failing, and that's a major problem.
Load times are very long.
Load a sample into a pad is a problem also because the loading is semi automatic. It takes great skill to choose the sample that will load.
The manual is a stew, but there are few functions so that's enough.
Also I can not sampler. Now this is the main function of a sampler right? On mine I'm trying to turn the mollete to select the source: NOTHING, it takes the sound from the built-in mic ...

SOUNDS

It sounds good, and oddly reverb and filter LowPass provided are quite good (better than al MPC1000 anyway).

Lousy, full of bugs, while the idea was good.
Go your way, do not buy it.

almost unnecessary conversion utility and especially running super bad (bug some of my samples), I use other software for conversions.

very good sound (16bit), the effects ... there is only one, a simple and clean reverb, and that's enough I hate effects such con groovebox

OVERALL OPINION

I use the device since its release in France, this is a sample player that suits me, I like the layout of the 16 pads, size, light weight, the connectors, the potential power via USB.
I do not like bugs (read a sample rather than another, it is rare but it happens), problems noon to wait so long for an update firmware still not there at the time where these words are written.

However, this is a very good value, if one is aware that this is "just" a sample player and not as an MPC sequencer

I would do without hesitation that choice for this award is my need.

OVERALL OPINION

-1 Months
-Any A bunch of samplers of all sizes (racks and table top).
-I Chose to buy it for a very simple reason: the MPX16 has no equivalent at this price. Indeed the MPX8 seemed very limited, and no manufacturer has thought of making a sampler / SD reader as simple and complete at this price.
Since the S20, for me there was a lack in this area.

- The pros: the pads, the strength of the bike, sound fidelity, full connectivity (you can sample directly, unlike MPX8!), And price.
-The -: Somewhat successful firmware that sometimes causes bugs (especially using the editor Akai, unnecessary and not so good) but Akai is trying to correct the situation (he did for MPX8 ..).

-Even though I complained a bit on the Akai site for firmware problems (which are far from making the machine unusable), I'm pretty happy with the MPX16: it is a fairly easy to use stand-alone machine, and which fulfills its purpose.

-Report Quality unbeatable price for me.

-I do not necessarily go that choice because I think my config will evolve into modular (!), but it has nothing to do with the quality of this machine).

The features are not announced the appointment:
"Pad ultra-sensitive" my eye. The PadKontrol for example is much more sensitive and provides all the velocity level. The MPX16 is insensitive and has a frequency response a little weird, going from low to max directly. It is very hard to have intermediate levels.

"Editor on Mac / PC." Nay! It's just an AIF to WAV converter as found dozens freeware ...

I put a score of 4 for aesthetics: the lights are pretty in a setup ... Otherwise I will put 2 or 3.

UTILIZATION

Not very practical ... in bulk:
- The display is partly hidden if one is not directly above the camera (unlike the picture let's see ... thank you totoshop)
- Caps knobs are pokey and slippery
- The great factory sounds ... 23 small samples without interest.
- The time of sample loading reminds me of samplers to disk.
- The implementation is poor twelve o'clock ... we just little trigger notes and choose the kit factory (but not user kits). No "CC" is not issued or recognized. The MPX16 is omni mode (it responds to all channels) and can not change it.

SOUNDS

Unusable:
For "user" samples, the first 50 ms of sound are cut off. So all samples battery sound "soft". There are more impact noise.
For very short samples (glitch) you hear nothing more bluntly.

OVERALL OPINION

I use it for one month ... in fact I used it for three days and since it is gathering dust waiting for a firmware update.
