« Dinky little practice amp, nothing more... »

Published on 05/20/10 at 14:34
This is a solid-state practice amp by Squier, a subsidiary of Fender. Whereas Squier guitars are sometimes decent, the amps are usually always pretty bad, except for a beginner. This is a perfect example of such an amp. There are two channels, clean and distorted. There is a gain knob for each channel, as well as a 3-band EQ and volume control that both work for both channels. The amp has minimal wattage, only about 15 watts. There aren't any effects. There is a simple 1/4" input and an external speaker output which is the same size.

UTILIZATION

This amp is certainly easy to use, there are only a handful of switches. Getting a good sound out of it would be difficult without a lot of pedals. It's basically a practice amp, and really, only a beginner should even consider it. The lack of range of tone is good for beginners, because it makes everybody sound equally bland, regardless of talent.

SOUNDS

This thing is a horrible sounding amp. The clean tone has almost no character unless you crank it to the max, and even then, there's some warmth to it but it still sounds pretty bland. The distortion channel is absolutely terrible. It's incredibly noisy, and there isn't a whole lot of actual guitar that cuts through the distortion, it's thick and gooey and messy. I think that the frequency curve on this thing is pretty crap, there's really only a variation of one sound that comes out of this amp.

OVERALL OPINION

I only liked the fact that I bought this thing for a hundred bucks, got my practice use out of it when I was younger, and then sold it to some other dude for just a little bit less. This is beginner territory only. Don't buy it if you've been playing for two years or more, there's better practice amps out there that will make you feel better about your playing.
