« The sound and feel .. »
Published on 04/08/13 at 12:31Easy installation and authorization without headaches.
Twin2 is a synth with three oscillators. No profusion of waveforms as in Massive, Gladiator or Predator: tri, saw, square, sin, white or pink noise. For each oscillator: detune, pulse width, hard sync level, pan and volume. Then there are two filters with three routing options (serial, parallel, per osc.) These filters can be LP, BP or HP, with a slope of 12, 24 or 48 dBs per octave. As always with FabFilter you have a choice between 11 "qualities" filter (gentle, raw, tube, metal etc..) For each frequency setting, resonance and pan. Then there are two delays in parallel. For each: time, feedback and cross-feedback. Both delay are sent in two filters for which we have the same setting options and choices than those seen previously. Finally, you can adjust the level and pan of the dry (without delay) and the wet (with delays filtered or not.) Do not forget the master tune and portamento which may be normal or legato.
Chapter comes controllers. Controller "XY" (which can handle with the mouse), XLFO (which can act as mini-sequencer or arpeggiator tempo sync), envelope generator, envelope follower or any source noon. The important thing is to know absolutely everything can be submitted to the controller, including the parameters of the controllers themselves. It can control up to fifty parameters (not bad, yes!)
Note finally that this synth can operate in mono or polyphonic mode (up to 32 voices), and we are also entitled to a mode unison voices from two to 32 (!)
I do not recall having a manual with this synth, but if needed, everything is explained very clearly and in detail by using interactive. Finally, in 1500 presets come with the beast, although classified by categories and sub-categories.
SUITABILITY/PERFORMANCE
I use on my MacPro Twin2 with MacOS 10.6.8 and Digital Performer. Never had any desire for stability or function. CPU usage very low in mono mode, it is of course significant mode unison 32 voices but without excess. A very soft and rationally developed, so.
OVERALL OPINION
I use this synth for something like three years. As we have seen, its architecture is quite simple and can be summed up easily. Nothing to do with Tone2 Gladiator for example. But the possibilities are not endless and less FabFilter has learned the most from a very simple configuration. The enormous modulation possibilities are certainly a lot. If you do not have the courage to scroll through the presets in 1500, at least listen to those contained in the "best of". They are also épatants each other. You will then realize that Twin2 is not focused on a specific genre, dance or techno, unlike a Predator example. It can adapt to many styles.
But beyond the sonic qualities of this synthesizer, we must insist on its ergonomics. His organization found on other apps FabFilter Timeless like Volcano or may require some time to adapt. But as soon as we understand, this synth programming becomes a joy. The assignment is done by controller stretching a virtual wire between the modulator and the target parameter. Afterwards, the relevant parameters appear above the controller. Rest assured, this is much easier to implement than to describe, and it can easily visualize the allocation of all controllers.
In total, this is a synth very productive, easy to obtain what we want and gives beautiful sound, lead, bass, pads, plucks or others who may be nervous, fatty acids, or gliding and whatever .. Several years later, I am always pleased to have acquired and I recommend it willingly.
