The 6505 series was heavily inspired by a classic Soldano Circuit, but takes things a step farther with more gain stages. As a result, clarity can sometimes be lost in the wash of preamp distortion, and a lot of people complain of the "fizzy" nature of the 6505's, as well as the background hiss that comes with the territory of high gain. And tha...
My favorite application is lead guitar- this amp just sings and sings for me and is a pefect compliment for my mid to hi gain leads. Very Mark-ish in its voicings, this lead response is wonderful. I like the rhythm gain, and the active eq allows one to dial in smoother gains to cutting chainsaw. In comparison, I tried a 6505+ in a store and tota...
I have since sold it but it was a great amp to start on, really taught me about tubes and I had a lot of fun playing with this amp. Had some really great tones but sadly none of them were beyond exceptional. I wanted something that blew me away with at least one thing instead of multiple good things.
Overall this is an amazing metal amp, a metal heads dream. Put a boost in front of it to tighten the low end slightly and this thing becomes a weapon. From Van Halen all the way to Machine Head, this thing is a beast. And for $1100 new I can't think of any other high end metal amp that can touch it's sound OR it's price.
Essentially, this amp does a few things but very well. It's not overly versatile, but if you're looking for a really tight balls to the wall high gain amp this excels at that. It's nice to have the separate EQing and all that and the footswitchable fx loop is rad, but this was a case of another amp that just wasn't for me. Luckily I got it for a...
This is your basic Peavey Classic 30 inside of a headshell instead of a combo amp. It’s a widely used budget amp that sounds great at a decent price. If you can pick one up used they are an extreme bargain and are real workhorses. The features are enough to get you by without needing outboard gear, though pedals work great with this amp out in...
This is a great amplifier in the pantheon of screaming rock classics. This is a fantastic amp for any subgenre of rock from the late 60s until now. There are certainly other amps that can get more tones, or can offer more glitz and glamour, but for a meat and potatoes player, this is the head. Highly recommended.
All in all I think the Peavey 5150 is a truly cool high gain amp. Though it might be a bit of a one trick pony, it does that trick extremely well. It's perfect for the modern metal player who needs serious doses of high gain tones at high volumes. They can be had for about $700 used if you look which is a very good price for a high gain, great s...
All in all I think the Peavey XXX is a decent high gain amp for modern rock or metal applications. The 120 watts might be overkill for some musicians and its voicing might be too modern for some players, but if you're looking for a well priced (around $500 used) head to do modern tones with tightness and aggression, give the Peavey XXX a whirl.
All in all I think the Peavey 6534 Plus is a great amp for anyone looking for a different sounding take on the classic Peavey high gain tone. It is built very well and still retains the spark that makes the original so awesome. It is reasonably priced and the value for money is great on these US made Peaveys. They are fairly loud amps so I would...
