Looking for idiot type guide for this interface.

Questions.

What is difference between using the gain knob on the sapphire 40 vs using the slider on the computer program for it?

Doesn't adjust either basically just increase the level/volume sent to protools?

Sorry I am new at this. If i am asking in wrong place i apologize.
