Portable with dual phantom power

Edirol FA-101Published on 08/27/12 at 23:29
The FA101 is a 10 in and 10 out interface, it is also pretty small for all of its capabilities. But it’s a perfect interface for home use, and if you want to pack it up in your mobile or laptop case to take with you for your recording needs if you are out and about. For it to be a little device you would expect it to have two separate pre amps and for it to be able to support recording as well as playback on up to 10 different channels. I used the FA101 with a mac book pro and it worked seamlessly and without any issues.

UTILIZATION

As I stated it has a phantom power microphone preamp button for both channels on the front of the unit which is a good surprise for the small size of the FA101. It records at 192kHz with a digital output of 44.1 kHz. On the Front of the FA101it also has a high impedance digital jack as well. You can also connect your midi devices to the FA101because it supports midi in and out.

GETTING STARTED

The owners manual is very in depth and well written as well as easy for the basic user to understand. Set up can get a little difficult depending on which DAW you are going to use it with. It will all come down to how familiar you are with using interfaces and also how familiar you are with using your own DAW and setting up your connects.

OVERALL OPINION

The FA101 is a smaller interface that is very portable, that is the most favorite aspect of it, you will have the ability to have a great quality interface no matter where you go and have all of the connection space you need for all situations. The quality for the price is very good, I highly recommend using the FA101

UTILIZATION

With OSX, just connect it and it works. Sometimes, the sound card is not recognized the first time, in which case you have to power off and restart to solve the problem. Set the sample rate on the front panel. Even if you select a different value in the software, the sample rate selected on the front panel apply.
Comprehensive manual.

GETTING STARTED

Stable with Logic. With my system and a 512-sample buffer, I get a latency time under 10 ms. I can have eight audio tracks and two virtual instruments with compressor + EQ on each channel, one aux reverb and a multiband compressor on the master. I already recorded six tracks simultaneously without a sweat. The balance control on the monitoring bus is very convenient.
Main drawback: the integrated preamps sound very cold so I don't use them. Don't expect a good sound when you connect a bass guitar directly to it, even with an amp simulation... The preamps of my Soundcraft sound much better.

OVERALL OPINION

I've been using it for one year.
Pros: balance for monitoring, powered via FireWire bus, size, number of ins/outs
Cons: preamps
Good value for money. At present, I would rather buy a Motu or the Apogee Duet, which has only two inputs but high-quality preamps (I tried it out with a guitar and it's simply not comparable). Summary: if you need a lot of connections in a compact housing, this sound card is for you. If you want to connect an instrument directly, choose another product...

NOTICE GLOBAL

Just an update for utilateurs on MAC OSX 10.4 from the aggregation of audio devices makes use many of the different cards as a single, leading to a clarification, this card this is perfectly possible, so for me 20in / 20out two FA-101 and it works perfectly, just do not use the aggregate device as the default system audio output in the pref / midi and switch the second card after OSX startup.
So purchase again ??
without problems and with both hands I sign !!
