Simple installation and configuration. It just happens basically. after some incompatibilities encountered with LE4 comes with a multi-purpose zoom, it's good to use an app that lets fly quietly.
As usual, I did not read the manual.

SUITABILITY/PERFORMANCE

my config: iMac OS X 10.6.8 / Intel Core i5 2.5 Ghz / 4GB DDR3 1333 Mhz ...
This is not the most powerful ordis range but it does turn your Essential 5 without coughing.
Only problem, insert the included effects created "POP" and other CRACs when we reached 7 to 8 playback tracks export as mixing.
But there is always a solution anyway with the range Steinberg.

OVERALL OPINION

I had Cubase SE. A computer that scorched a new computer that does not accept the old software and is blocked.
So I had to buy Essential 5 2 years ago and from SE to E5, we say "B # @ $ €! # Of & £ @%!, I miss applications!"
But we quickly realized that in other shop that are just as effective, and even completely replacing those we supposedly lost.

OVERALL OPINION

2 years in my possession, I had version 3SX pending the years, that I like the least c is the number of track automation clamped in display that has a single inconvenient when we used to mix

I used it on Macbook Pro (only 2 USB ports!!). I had a big Intel Core 2 Duo with 4G Ram a 250GB hard drive in Sata.

The program does not rowed. Low latency sound card M-AUDIO Fast Track Ultra.

OVERALL OPINION

I used 2 years and came back to PC with Cubase 5 full version because I criticized the essential not to have some tools like VariAudio.

I do not exactly redeem this product now that I'm back on the PC.

Install W7 on a PC and Mac Osx 10.6 without pb. The manual electro .... yeah!
Despite an update, the driver ASIO E-MU 04040 (I / O audio & MIDI ext.) Plant constantly on W7, No problem with the Mac driver.

Mac mini 120GB HD + 320GB Ext / Firewire - 1GB ram (ss pbs) - 2Ghz intel (runs 2 times better than the PC with 5-8 and 5-8 VSTi VST

97Khz external soundcard, ASIO latency almost 0-E-MU 0404 USB (included i / o noon) (impossible to use on PC)

Yamaha DX7 keyboard connected to Midi

Never had a crash on Mac

OVERALL OPINION

1 year and a half
- Cakewalk and Cubase Sonar6 used before
- The MOST: The rich functionality and plugs (VSTI HALionOne + Synth)
- The LESS: The rich functionality and plugs
- Q / P excellent (qq with fewer elements (not necessary) Elements 6 to 99 € a lot too).
- At my level really excellent choice (piano, midi, guitar, backtracks, and partition MIX Cam YT)

Typical installation of Windows 7.
No incompatibilities or instability noted.
The grip is rather easy for the basics.
No printed documentation, which is a shame but at the other hand, are made of paper savings for the planet.
Documentation are available in PDF in French and very well explained all the possibilities of this famous software.

SUITABILITY/PERFORMANCE

I use it with a portable HP dv6 - HHZ 2 - 4 GB of RAM under Windows 7.
I utlise very simply with a midi controller AKAI MPK mini to a few small pieces using VST instruments and that's it.

For recording live audio, a dedicated sound card music is needed to correct the latency.

The software is very stable. You are limited to 16 MIDI instruments but I have never been beyond six instruments. So it is quite sufficient for my use.

Virtual instruments included with (Halion one and Prologue) have the advantage of providing a first set of banks and various sounds are enough to make some pieces. After that depends on your musical tastes and it will probably not consider buying or sound banks meet your expectations. Included effects seem unnecessary at this time given my lack of experience in audio processing. I'll pass for now.

OVERALL OPINION

I use it for over a year and I can say that this software remains the standard for computer music. To start, I recommend buying it in Elements version (99 €). Be aware that you can then purchase upgrades to full versions Artist or a discount.

Newer audio interfaces which I, by the way, really need to get around to reviewing, often bundle themselves with Steinberg with the venerable Cubase suite of software. In keeping with using only the previous version of the current professional version, the current budget audio interfaces come bundled with Cubase 5 Essential, a program that can get you started in ten minutes if you have used Cubase before, or maybe half a day if you have not. Let me get into my gripe with Cubase, Steinberg needs to make it easier and more accessible to get started, instead of burying it underneath a sea of features geared toward professionals, which, by the way, are largely stripped away in the lite version. Routing audio and setting up inputs and outputs is a pain in the butt if you have never used this program before.

SUITABILITY/PERFORMANCE

On the subject of performance, while I have found that every version of Cubase, save for the latest version, tends to be a little bit uncooperative on my computer with me. So let me start this section off by saying that I was strangely surprised with how well this performed. Unlike the full version of Cubase 5, this was not as bloated, so I am going to assume that Cubase 5 Essential just does not come with everything that I complained about in the full professional version. Wait. That is a problem. Cubase never in history won any points for the general way it functioned and flowed. It won points for its comprehensive features, especially in midi manipulation, which, being an essential and lighter version, this particular instance of Cubase seems to not have. So, considering the fact that Cubase 5 Essential lacks what makes Steinberg's software special, it is hard to recommend it. It, however, performed well enough for me to consider it an acceptable digital audio workstation.

OVERALL OPINION

Steinberg is staying afloat because it seems to own the rights to a million different features that professionals nowadays claim to not be able to live without. Of course, when these features get stripped away in an essential version, the simple truth is there is nothing terribly appealing about Cubase 5 Essential, or any of the non comprehensive professional full versions, for that matter. In the end, if the digital audio workstation is the fulcrum on which you are making your decision, you are best sticking with another.

No worries, update from Cubase SE 3 downloaded from Steinberg (50 €) if I remember right 30 minutes later it worked!

Well yes, it's cubase, you click ok and it installs!
