Best tape recorder

k, i have two questions

1) i kind of already asked this in my "tape to cd??" post, but i figured its a different question so i'll ask it in a different post. what would you guys suggest for a straight tape recorder? i have a mixer and so all i wanted was something to record tapes with. i have the JVC KD-D10 cassette player/recorder and the JVC A-K10 stereo amplifier set up right now, but it can't handle much, all controls relating to gain have to be put way down and that's just with vocals and acoustic guitar. so does anyone suggest a cassette recorder which is actually built to record?

2) regarding laying down tracks on a tape recorder, someone suggested i get a Edirol FA-101. so how does that work exactly?
