Thread Advise on which recorder to choose

Hello, I am in a three piece band,We have been doing some recordings on my four track 424mk11 and dumping down to a dat.
I would like the availabity of more tracks and have been debating on getting the fostex vf160 or the tascam 788 portastudio.
I have heard that both these units have there own effects , but you can only use one at a time for each track. I have my own off board effects an was wondering if I could ues those with these boards (not during recording but during playback and mix down.)
If anyone has any advise on these recorders I would sure appreciate it.
