The DigiTech Brian May Red Special is a guitar effects pedal that is modeled after the classic tones of Brian May of the rock band Queen. I also believe that it was designed by Brian May himself, which would explain how well this pedal emulates his sound. It has 1/4 inch connections and is not a rackable unit.
UTILIZATION
The configuration of the DigiTech Brian May Red Special guitar pedal is pretty simple to follow and if you have any experience with guitar pedals you'll have no problems figuring out this pedal. Each knob has two layers of parameters and the unit as a whole has parameters for gain, level, treble, bass, and a knob to emulate the custom guitar that Brian May plays, with options to choose between either single coil or humbucker pick up emulation. It then has a mode knob that has seven different fixed points, each of which emulates the tone of a different Queen song. The manual for this pedal is put together well but isn't necessary to learn the unit.
SOUND QUALITY
The sound quality of the DigiTech Brian May Red Special is pretty outstanding, and is an extremely versatile pedal to boot. Not only does it do a great job of emulating May's tone, but is a cool pedal in its own right with plenty of different types of sounds. I usually use this pedal with a Fender Strat plugged into a '76 Fender Twin Reverb, so I think I get a pretty accurate read on what this pedal truly sounds like. Whether you are a fan of Queen and Brian May or not, I think you'll agree this is a cool pedal, but it is especially great for those of us who are fans like me.
OVERALL OPINION
I've been using the DigiTech Brian May Red Special pedal since it came out about a year or two ago as I was anticipating the release of this pedal for a while. I love the different tones I'm able to achieve with this pedal and the tones are pretty awesome across the board. Although the price isn't cheap, this is really a must have for guitar players who are big Brian May fans. Overall, highly recommended for all guitar players and especially Queen fans.
