The Pearl DS-06 is a distortion pedal for electric guitar, coming from an unlikely source. While most use this with an electric guitar, it can definitely be used with any electronic instrument as it has standard 1/4 inch connections. I believe it can be powered by a battery, but I’ve only used it with a standard nine volt power supply. This isn’t rack mountable in any way, as it is a stomp box.

UTILIZATION

The make up of the Pearl DS-06 is pretty self explanatory and easy to follow. You’ve got four straight forward parameters in the form of knobs, including mode, level, out level, and distortion. I’m not sure how many different modes there are exactly, but there are at least five or six (bringing up a specs page on this will give you more information about it’s exact make up). I expected there to be a bit more versatility between the different settings, but a lot of them come off sounding the same. Since the DS-06 doesn’t have any features or parameters out of the ordinary, I don’t think a manual is necessary and it would probably be pretty hard to find one even if you did want one.

SOUND QUALITY

The sound of the Pearl DS-06 isn’t anything too impressive in my opinion. I was surprised about its limitations after trying it, as I guess I expected to be able to get a number of versatile different tones from the modes alone. The sounds that you can get are a bit bland in my opinion, and I think I’m getting a good read on the sound considering that I have used it with a Fender Strat and a ’76 Fender Twin Reverb. While it will get the job done in terms of distorting, I usually look for a distortion or overdrive tone that will cut through well and not be too muddy, and I just wasn’t able to get that type of sound from this pedal. Perhaps others will have better luck getting the sound that they want from this pedal…

OVERALL OPINION

I don’t know all too much about the DS-06 other than what I know from using it a few times for a recording sessions for someone else. I can’t say much that I haven’t already said, and while I can’t say this would be a pedal that I recommend, I won’t say never to try it out as you never know what someone else could do with it, but I wasn’t a fan of this one.
