Hello,

I just got a Gibson SGM 2014 guitar with two '61 zebra' pickups. It's the first time I get a guitar with pickups in plain sight without a cover. Each dual pickup is apparently composed of two individual pickups attached together by some ugly black duct tape that goes round the two of them. Seen from above, each o representing a string magnet, and T representing the duct tape :

TTTTTTTT
TooooooT
TooooooT
TTTTTTTT

Is that normal?

Thank you for you attention,
Seb

If I understand your image correctly, then I believe the reason is, some guitarists like Dimebag Darrell and Steve Vai would tape the sides of their neck pickups to stop the strings from getting caught on it when doing some crazy shredding.

Here's a pick of Dime with what I think you're talking about...

Read about his guitar setup here where it talks about the duct tape. It's definitely an uncommon guitar mod which imho doesn't do shit...

Hello needmorebass, thanks for your reply

I had confirmation that it was in fact standard on these (all?) pickups and quite mandatory for preventing unwinding of the coils and general unpleasantness.

Thanks for your link, I had a good laugh at the torn out floyd tremolo :)

Best,
Seb
