    Marshall AVT50 Combo

    Marshall AVT50Published on 01/26/08 at 15:00
I've been gigging for about 20 years. I play heavy electric blues. I run both an SSS strat with 3x Dimarzio H2s in a single coil mode and another HH strat with 2x PAF Humbuckers. My rig is pretty simple relying only on a wah, boost, compression, and some time based effects depending on the mood.

I bought this at PMT in Birmingham UK, for about £250 about 7 years ago to gig in smaller venues so I didn't have to lug around my plexi.

I love the distortion and the two channel switching. The effects loop is a nice. It's great for practicing and for small rehearsal spaces. I found it most useful if you use it for a dirty tone with an a/b to a Fender Twin for clean. Also, I like the fact t…

I love the distortion and the two channel switching. The effects loop is a nice. It's great for practicing and for small rehearsal spaces. I found it most useful if you use it for a dirty tone with an a/b to a Fender Twin for clean. Also, I like the fact that you can drive a cab if you need to. I found that through a 4x12 slant it really came into it's own.

The single speaker. I've never really liked the tone of it. It kind of just gets lost in the mix at higher volumes if you are pushing it so it needs to be mic'd. The PAFs really tend to drive the unit hard and the amp really can't keep up at higher volumes so either gets really muddy or really harsh. I am not too fond of the clean tone (hey, it
is a Marshall) To my ear I would rather use the direct out to the PA than the main speaker.

Excellent construction however the reverb went on me unexpectedly in a gig taking the rest of the unit out with it. I put this down to a freak accident.

It's heavy for the size and needs a good set of castors if you want to save your back.

You get what you pay for. I think it is a very good practice and small venue amp, but a bit dodgy for any major gig unless you have a good PA to back you up. I'd probably buy it again, but I would only buy the head and then either use the DI or mix and match cabs.

I'm in my second coming as a guitarist as my son is nearly tenage and getting more independent, so the wife and I have more time for our little "obsessions".
I play mainly blues and have been mainly influenced by Eric Clapton,JJ Cale amongst others although I enjoy any good guitar playing.I have two Fender Strats and a Squier Tele Custom II.I also have a Peavey Rockingham Archtop and a Fender Resonator for differenr grooves.I played in bands about 25 years ago but now just Jam with my friends.

I got this amp from Sound Control UK I traded up from my MG30DFX.

The amp is a simple typically solid well built Marshall product.
Gain /volume/ Bass /Treble and Overdrive with a sweet spring reverb.
Comes with a footswitch too.Effects loop is available at the back. Theres also a headphone jack .
This amp delivers for me !! It has outstanding clean tones for a Marshall , something which took me by surprise. Just roll back on the bass and boot the treble .
The OD Section is very versatile with many options available to dial in, I keep it half dirty with half reverb and the result gives me that instant recognosable Marshall clout.
Contrary to some reviews I find this Amp great for single coils. I can also find sweet Jazz tones with my Archtop.
All in all a very versatile and good amp.
I returned a crate vtx65 comb and chose this inssaed. The Crate had bags of effects but this simple Marshall just does it with pedals if you want them.
I would buy another tomorrow if it were stolen

    No real gripes !

Construction: Built like a Tank - British Marshall.
    Looks and feels the business

I would recommend this amp to anyone.

I bought my marshall over ebay for $299.95 plus shipping, so all in all a little under $350. I bought an avt because I had read good things about them, and i chose the 50 watter because that was about all I needed, for very small private gigs and practice.

    I absolutely love everything:
First off, its loud, you can easily jam, practice, or gig with this unit, 50 watts of hybrid power give you way more than even 80 or so, in my opinion, of solid state. also, the overdrive has very good tone for a hybrid, it has one tube in the preamp, so it sounds bright, clean and focused, and the power section behaves like a tube amp, so you get good compression, sustain, and you can really get into mu…

sometimes the distortion can get a little fuzzy, you have to turn down the gain a hair to get a better sound. im thinking of putting a different tube in, one thats engineered with lower noise. but dont let that discourage you, its a nice amp worth the money.

this amp is built nicely, its quality marshall, its good, but the trade off is weight. its on the heavier side at about 50 lbs.

very nice, loud, bursting with tone and warmth. perfect for small gigs and practice. plus with a 12" celestion, you get good lows. get an amp with good overdrive already in it, dont use sissy crappy sounding pedals to get distortion.

    Last week - £330

The sound is clean and crisp - the best amp I have used

It is very heavy for its size and not easy to transport - but thats a small price to pay for such a great amp

    Heavy
    Compact
    Excellent quality

I was reluctant to pay the amount but has since proved a wise investment

Well to honestly tell you the truth! Nothing! Appart from it would help if there was an extra output, for an extension cab. So you can run both speakers at the same time to ballance the sound out. But its not a dislike.

Well i havent had it as long to bash it about yet. But on the other hand it looks pretty tough.

Well put it this way when the english say that somthing is "The Dogs Bollo*@s", they mean its the best, the sh$t, can't get better. And quite frankly for this kind of money you can't get better!!

I was trying out Crate GX212's and saw this amp sitting over in the Marshall pile. I wasn't gonna spend $475.00 on an amp, but after I heard it, I had to have it. The manager at the Guitar center gave it to me for $475.00 out the door.

The amp has a great clean tone, even has it's own gain adjustment for each channel. The overdrive channel works good for my level of playing, and actually makes pretty decent distortion. I don't use a pedal with this amp. You must use a higher volume to get a good gain sound out of it, and it's loud. Really loud. I had it up to 4 the other day, and it was too loud for my apartment.

Nothing really to not like about it. It definitely has a "Marshall" tone to it, so some people might not like it. (definitely play it a closed room where you can turn it up) It might be nice to have a switch on it somewhere to cut the wattage in half, this amp is loud!

Excellent. Ruggedly built, and will probably last forever. Oh yeah, it's heavy, too.

Overall a pretty good amp. Not as good as a Soldano, or Mesa, in the gain department, but for under $500.00, it's worth it. If you go play one, you have to turn it up past 3, you'll really enjoy it.

I bought it at GuitarCenter in Tacoma, WA for $475.

The clean channel sounds great. The Distortion channel is all it should be too. It also has a output for recording or use with an external PA.

Not much that I don't like about it. The reverb could be a little deeper for my taste, But otherwise it's great.

Good solid construction. Haven't ever seen a Marshall that couldn't take a beating.

Marshall has made quality sound available to everyone with this amplifier. All around great tone at any volume level.

Good for house use. It was a great amp, but the clean kind of killed it. It is not a Marshall TSL clean but its a clean. think you should go try it out.

    Decent combo amp

    Marshall AVT50Published on 09/01/11 at 18:07
This amplifier is a combo amp made by Marshall. It's part of Marshall's Valvestate series, which means that it's supposed to sound like a tube amp but use solid-state technology. This is a common feature that has been happening from the early 90s onwards, and it's infiltrated most amp manufacturers since it helps cut costs.
The amp has a 1/4" input, as well as a CD input and a headphone output. The CD input allows you to play along to a CD or similar device to learn songs, which would indicate that this is very much a beginners' amp. The amp is 50 watts and has two channels, clean and overdrive, and reverb.

    UTILIZATION

The controls for this amp include a gain, volume, and two-band eq for the clean channel. Also, there is a gain, volume, and three-band EQ for the overdrive channel. There is one reverb knob which controls the reverb for both channels.
Getting a good sound out of this amp takes a minute, assuming you like solid-state like tones. The manual explains everything with this amp pretty clearly, though it doesn't really get into detail about how to get the best sound.

    SOUNDS

I don't really think this is one of Marshall's better amps. To be honest, both channels on this amp are lacking. The claim of this amp emulating tube tone is a pretty weak one, to be honest. The clean channel is way too pure to be considered tube. That doesn't mean it's a horrible tone, but it isn't one that I prefer at all. The overdrive channel is honestly not "rock" enough for me. I find it to be overly heavy. With a guitar that has humbuckers, and is suitable for rocking out, you can get some really heavy, almost metal, sounds with it. That makes it good for any metal lovers or even 80s hard rock fans. However, I don't find the EQs to be that great, and the sound is really not that great for anything but the aforementioned genres. Also, the reverb isn't that great either.

    OVERALL OPINION

This amp really isn't anything special. The price is the only thing about it that is good, which makes sense considering it's not that great overall. The sound isn't the best I've heard from Marshall. For beginners, and guys who need a decent practice amp for metal, this might work, but everybody else could do better.

    Just junk

    Marshall AVT50Published on 06/22/11 at 10:17
This amp is pretty much just junk. Marshall seems to put out these low end cheap amps and rotate the model numbers every few years or so. They have since discontinued this amp and think is replaced by the MG series amps.

If you are simply going for a practice amp that will be decent at low volumes and allow you to just get your chops and technique down then this is a great amp for that. This is in no way a gigging amp or a stage amp of any kind.

    SOUNDS

This amp has the classic Marshall/British distortion. You can play this amp at very low volumes and with the headphone jack be able to silently play in your home or office without interruption.

Any guitar will sound fine with the amp. I prefer a nice Gibson Les Paul with Marshall amps as they seems to fit sonically together very well. Even a good Fender Stratocaster will sound too. It just depends on the mood whether or not you want to get a fat sounding distortion tone or a sweet Jimi Hendrix Strat tone with the single coils.

    OVERALL OPINION

These amps are not being produced anymore and so the used market is the only option at this point. I have no idea what they are going for these days in this market. I think with the hybrid technology with solid state and tubes give this amp a step above the all solid state amps, but it still doesn't get that real tube punch.

I would recommend this amp to someone who needs a good practice amp and doesn't want to spend a lot of money doing it. It has an emulated direct out so if you wanted to use this to record you can or even run a line directly to the house PA system. Not sure how that would sound but worth a shot I guess.

    OVERALL OPINION

I use it for about six months. I found good settings quickly. My guitar is happy and me too. on the other hand, not rely directly on the recording line-out (I guess that's true for all amps).

The thing that is crazy with Marshall is that when playing with other instruments, we hear you clearly without straining.

I play with the 50 avt for nearly two years. This is an excellent purchase, very good value for money, compact, with good potential for those who do not want to ruin everything in a lamp. If c'éatit to brefaire, I would do without hesitation, in fact I plan to keep the combo for rehearsals and small rooms, and buying 50 AVT head for bigger concerts. Marshall truth without paying the mark or useless gadgets.

    SOUNDS

The Marshall sound - The pre-amp tube enhances the sound quality. All configurations have been tested ... Loop / series etc. ... The rendering is good ... both with clear sounds with sounds saturated.
Saturations important types SansAmp GT2, MXR, Boss go quite well or even very well with a noise gate to predict for Tech21.
The clean sounds are downright good: crystalline and wishes to slap with rather nice harmonies

    OVERALL OPINION

In general, Marshall is used for the grain typical UK.
This little combo associated with ECC83 delivers clear sound quite interesting. From dun certain level of volume, the pre-amp starts to saturate the preamplifier stage to create a saturation of a typical tube amp.
The grain used to refine the color of sound: its wide range of bright blues rock until saturation.
I use this material for over 2 years. Personally I only play on the clean channel from which I built my sound (clear crystalline was saturated). Floor lamp pre-amplification delivers a warm and rich in harmony. The Overdrive channel is not used because of saturation juser a little tougher and it is easier to settle on a clear channel rather quune saturated channel.
Excellent value for money. Intermediate between the all-tube and transistors (MGX Series with its cold and linear). I do it again without hesitation that choice - very good compromise lamp / transistor consider leaving the acquisition of a head AVT150 to repeat in the studio and on stage.

    SOUNDS

I use it for a year with a Mexican Start and a pedal boss ME 50 (See my profile). I think this amp works very well for clean sounds, it is relatively accurate and colorful, increasing the gain, you get a crunch sound correct, however I am somewhat disappointed by the overdrive channel that sounds a bit too transistor to my taste but there is even a way to find any adjustment not too bad, after all it's tastes ... I just bought an sg standard, it sounds much better now already in with the strat disto. There are ways to boost a little by inserting a distortion pedal between guitar and amp input for a disto "heavier".

    OVERALL OPINION

Despite a slight disappointment with regard to the overdrive channel, I think AVT50 my opinion is a good compromise between the transistor and the whole lamp, after all depends on the style of music you want to play: for all sounds clear gender funk chorus sounds so it's ideal, to rock a bit but it's going to nag after to the metal I dunno ... I've never try to make the scene, I did that the home studio so I use the exit "line out" of the amp that I plug my PC directly to my records and I am quite happy with the result ...
