20 October 2026 to 05:56How much preamp gain do you actually need? (SM7B and friends)
#1
Why is my SM7B so quiet?” comes up constantly, and the answers are usually “get a Cloudlifter” or “buy a better interface”. But the real answer depends on the mic’s sensitivity, how loud you are, how close you sit, and what your preamp can deliver cleanly.
Pick a mic (or enter your own sensitivity), set how loud you speak and your distance from the mic, then enter your interface’s maximum gain and EIN. It shows the gain you need, whether your preamp has enough, and the estimated noise floor. As a rough example, an SM7B at 8 cm on a normal speaking voice needs around 60+ dB.
I’d like to hear from people who set gain every day:
Does the number match what you actually use on your interface?
Is a 6 dB change per halving of distance still fair when you’re 5 to 10 cm from the mic, with proximity effect?
What would you want in a tool like this that’s missing (singing, instruments, inline preamps)?
If it gives a result that doesn’t match your experience, post your mic, distance and interface and I’ll see where the model is off.
