Peavey EVH Wolfgang Special TRPublished on 08/17/12 at 15:31
The EVH Wolfgang Special is one awesome instrument! Basswood body, Maple top, neck and fingerboard, stainless steel frets, trem with Dtuna. Comes loaded with EVH humbuckers. Many colors and paints to choose from including the stealth which is so cool looking.

UTILIZATION

It's hard to explain just how great this thing feels to play. The gig I have always heard with these is that the height of the frets, which is small, makes it difficult to play. Let me tell you this is the farthest thing from the truth. I am a Les Paul guy but this thing is a beast of a guitar and plays as good if not better than my Les Pauls. Very hard to put down.

Notes are easy to grab all the way up the board, great access to the upper frets and excellent placement of all the controls. The pots turn like no other I have ever felt, very effortless almost to a fault. Any little bump and they are turning but when you need to do volume swells and such like Eddie, they are perfect.

SOUNDS

When I first read the specs of the EVH humbuckers, I thought they would be very tame. When I heard them, I was blown away! These things rip and sound phenomenal. I really could not put this down the first time I played it. Neck pick up is warm and has just the right amount of bass tone to it for full lead tones. The bridge pick up has great cut and is perfect for EVH tones as one would expect.

OVERALL OPINION

Overall I love this guitar and would suggest anyone in the market for a great playing and sounding instrument give this a go. I have played the expensive version and the special and let me tell you there is little if any difference in the feel and sound. If you want the carved top than go for the big bucks version but the special does it all just as good from a functional perspective. This guitar does not disappoint! Only thing is the ease of the pot turning and how you can slightly bump it but that as I said is a good and a bad thing so I see it as a wash. All in all this is a great instrument worth of the Man who designed it! Love it!

I like Eddie's sound, so I wanted to try one out, but they are hard to find at music stores. Finally found one, and tried out a few. Paid about $600 for it (did a trade).

It is very easy to play. The neck finish is great. the tremolo is awesome. I don't like floating tremolos because they never stay in tune. This one has great dives. The sound is great. I bought a Peavy 5150 2X12 combo, and this guitar kicks ass through it. Wish I could say it sounds like Eddie, but I could play his actual guitar and not sound like him!

The only thing I don't like is the toggle switch - it's backwards. I get mixed up because I have a Les Paul which is set up opposite. But that is a small...…

good construction, good quality. I've read some people complain that it's basswood instead of mahogony, but I can't tell any difference when I'm jamming. If it sounds good, it sounds good.

I'd buy it again if anything ever happened to it. It's my favorite guitar, and I've had a lot of guitars.

Purchased from Sam Ash in Cleveland for $570. I have had this instrument for about 5 weeks now.

First off I don't write reviews. This will be my 1st. I just feel it necessary to get the word out about this one though. I have been playing for a little over 20 years. This is THE neck to end all necks for me anyway. I play a very eclectic range of music that requires several guitars to pull off generally. Jazz/Blues/Funk to heavy shredding ala little Stevie Vai. This guitar is cabable of handling anything. The stock pick-ups are excellent. The neck is amazing. Sustain?? Hello?? I can hit a note and come back tomorrow. You can feel it resonating through the body even unplugged. The finish and quality are way above average for a Korean built bottom of the line offering but make no mistake, this is a quality instrument. The D-Tuna is a HUGE bonus. While the rest of the band are tuning down I'm having a coke and a smile!!

Lack of a tone knob. Endorsment of Eddie probably adds quite a bit to the price tag. Basswood body at this price?? But still the tone is wonderful so I can't complain too much.

This guitar was in tune out of the box! This guitar is a well constructed, durable instrument.

I had a $1000 budget when I went looking. I played the American series and could't find a reason to spend the extra money. I played literally dozens of guitars and painstakingly researched every one. Read the reviews etc. I could have had a guitar with more features etc.. but this one feels so good and is the absolute best overall guitar that I could find in the $1000 or less price category. Go play it and decide for yourself but definately play it.

I´ve always thought that Eddie has a great sound. That´s why I wanted to get the same sound as he does, without using so many effects.I had my friend import it for me here in europe for 750 €.I can tell you, it´s worth the price.

Long sustain is one of the things I like the most.It looks good. The neck is the best part.Smooth and short.Makes it simple to play. The strings are close to the neck wich makes tapping easier. The strings are´nt too close to each other so you can do arpeggios easily.Last, simplicity. You really don´t need all those switches and knobs.

Well the one way tremolo.I tend to use a certain kind of lick in my solos: Play a note, press the tremolobar down and let it up...…

Well the one way tremolo.I tend to use a certain kind of lick in my solos: Play a note, press the tremolobar down and let it up on its own= frrrrr you know!I´ll have to skip that with this guitar.I guess I´ll have to vary my techniques.

It feels really solid. The design is great. The EVH autograph at the back of the neck makes me so proud. This is my guitar.

I you play thrash, heavy metal etc.Don´t buy this guitar. If you play blues, rock´n´roll, jazz, progressive the evh, s.lukather kind of music. This is the right guitar for you.
