« Near Amp Drive in pedal form! »

Published on 04/09/11 at 22:29
The Obsessive Compulsive Drive from Fulltone features your standard dirt pedal appointments, with a little extra

-Volume, drive, and tone knobs to dial in your sound
-High Power and Low Power switches for instant change in voicing
-True Bypass
-Power via 9V batter or AC adapter
-Accepts up to 18V of power for additional headroom if desired

UTILIZATION

Use it like a typical pedal- dial in your sound, stomp on it, and go! The dials offer a very pleasant range, and many usable tones in between. If you are not quite getting your sound in the range of the dials, make sure to re-explore in the other voicing settings, as it offers a whole new side to the pedal.

SOUND QUALITY

Overall, the Fulltone OCD offers an overdrive with a more recessed midrange, smoother highs, and bigger lows than your typical tubescreamers. For this reason, it works very well in front of a more mid oriented amplifier, such as a Marshall. Using it as a boost in front of this sort of amplifier really helps to balance the frequencies, and just brought more out of the amp. When using it to boost my Boogies, the low end would get a little too wooly, and midrange a little too lost. For an overly smooth lead sound, it would be a great combination, but for a percussive and strong attack, it was not the right combination. As a stand alone overdrive, the pedal is astounding- one of the best in my opinion. It is nearly as dynamic and harmonically rich as an amplifier would be, which is a true feet for a pedal. On a final note, I REALLY like this pedal with single coil pickups. It really helped to fatten them up and getting things going.

OVERALL OPINION

This is a unique overdrive from Fulltone, and very popular for good reason. Using it over a clean channel is like adding a whole new drive channel to your amplifier. With the right combination of pickups and amp, it also makes a great boost.
