Epiphone Elitist '61 SG

I bought this baby at Guitar Center for $1069. I wanted a guitar that looked awesome, sounded awesome, and had an awesome price. I believe I achieved that goal.

I love the looks of this thing. It looks evil, without looking stupid like BC Rich guitars. It sounds amazing, from the cleans to the meanest distortion. I love it. It's light, so its easy on the back unlike Les Pauls. Many people prefer the LP to the SG, but not me. And this guitar is a very good reason why.

It's kind of fragile. I'm always worried that I'll scratch it or something. I treat this like it was my baby though. And, truth be told, it is

Gibson has always had top-notch construction, and this SG is a perfect example of this tradition that holds true today. From the nut placement to the tune-o-matic bridge, there is nothing wrong with it at all. I love it. This guitar will last my whole life as long as I love and take care of it, and believe me, I will.

Gibson has been and continues to be the greatest name in electric guitars. And this SG is a perfect example of why. Do your self a favor and buy this guitar.

I got this SG used from a music store in Berkeley, CA for $800. Cheap b/c previous owner had a metal-studded strap that scratched up the back of the guitar pretty good. Moron.

It's grrrrreat for playing live. Thin body, light weight, easy to play, compact size. You CAN NOT beat the clarity of the sound. I have the stock double hum fuc...buckers in it, and it's great for clean sounds. How does it sound "dirty", as x-tina would say? Umm, see "Please describe what you don't like about the unit:" below.

Overall, good guitar, but not the best.

The SG's thin body takes away from the thickness and warmth of the sound. It's real clear, but not real deep.

Distorted, it sounds good, but not like a Les Paul. I guess it's personal preference, but I think if you're going to pay the $$ for a nice Gibson, and you don't mind the weight, why wouldn't you buy a Les Paul??

1 functionality problem: I don't like the location of the toggle switch. It's down by the volume and tone knobs. The Les Paul location, up top, is much easier to switch on the fly.

Forward strap nut placement: It looks good to not see the front strap nut, but it sucks for playing. The guitar, at rest when you're standing up, has the ass-end up, and the neck pointing at the floor. Pet peeve, but I don't care for this.

Construction and quality of the guitar is amazing. Gibson does a really, really good job. This guitar is 100% reliable. And like another SG reviewer so apty put it, you could drop this thing out of the window doing 75 and it would stay in tune.

Great guitar. 2nd place all-time Gibson. 1st place - the Les Paul.

I got my baby at the local guitar center for around 850$

I nicknamed my guitar "Blitzkrieg." Why? Because that's what it sounds like. So deep and chunky sounding. It sounds like Satan (in a good way, of course). It is just so powerful and can knock people of their people. Every note is oppressive. Great for chugging and grinding. The pick ups are great and very versitile. Very good sustain as well. The crimson color caps off this evil piece of machine.

Hmmm...*scratches head* This guitar is fairly delicate. It may not SOUND delicate...but it is. I already chipped it a few times and I treat this thing as I would treat my own child. Just get a hard case and you'll be alright.

Very well thought out construction by the Gibson folks. I think it was a good idea to have the cut outs all the way down to the 22nd fret for the high notes. I also appreciate how easy it is to restring. Just push it through. There's no nonsense down there.

If you like deep, dark, powerful sounding guitars that never stop putting out, get the Gibson SG. It won't let you down.
