    Jay Turser SG Style

    Jay Turser JT50Published on 10/26/04 at 15:00
I bought this guitar at a local shop.
    I paid $180.
    It was a bargain.

I like the neck through design.
    It has beautiful pearl inlays.
It plays exaclty like my Gibson Sg.

    It lacks "bottom end."
Jay Turser should make the same guitar with alder or mahogany woods.

    Construction is good.

This is not a bad Sg copy.
As mentioned, a little more attention to the tone would have made this guitar
    much better.

    Jay Turser JT 50

I purchased the guitar online from Maggio Music. I paid $200. I bought it based on some positive reviews from Harmony Central, and the affordability of the product.

The price can not be beat. The double cut away body and set neck makes it fast and easy to play all the way up the fret board.
    It sounds great.

It is a little sticky on the side of the neck where it joins the body, because of a thin layer of excess glue. The guitar strap button is located in the back of the guitar, instead of on the top. This location makes the guitar too top heavy.

There are no gaps between neck and body. The guitar was set up properly at the factory, so there is know need to make any adjustments. Intonati…

There are no gaps between neck and body. The guitar was set up properly at the factory, so there is know need to make any adjustments. Intonation is good, and there is no fret buzzing. The 2 classic chrome pickups work great. The flushed set neck, pitched head stock, tunomatic bridge and pickups provide great sustain. The guitar body is a pseudo sg type and is very light. The body is alder. Two volume and tone knobs. A 3 ply black pick guard. The guitar has a transparent red finish.

Jay Turser products combines affordability and quality. You will not find another guitar in this price range that can beat it!

Not bad for a beginner guitar.

    UTILIZATION

Albeit designed after the inimitable Gibson SG, this guitar still succeeds in the low-end price range. It looks similar to an SG, with slightly different curves and lines, but it is similar enough that the JT50 still looks like a classic design. UTILIZATION

Albeit designed after the inimitable Gibson SG, this guitar still succeeds in the low-end price range. It looks similar to an SG, with slightly different curves and lines, but it is similar enough that the JT50 still looks like a classic design. It offers great fret access like an SG, and the controls are virtually identical. The guitar I've been playing on feels a touch neck heavy on a strap, so that is something to consider.

    SOUNDS

The pickups are a weak area on this guitar. They are a bit lacking in definition and clarity, and do not offer much girth. They are relatively quiet, which is a plus, and they function properly, but this is an area of the guitar that could be vastly improved upon for just a bit extra. For a beginner, this guitar isn't a bad choice, but when the time is made to upgrade, if some used Duncans or even Epiphone pickups could be found for cheap, it would make this guitar sound much better.

    OVERALL OPINION

For the price range, this is a good guitar. I have had two of my guitar students that played these, and they aren't bad at all - they have a cool factor enough to keep a student that's interested in classic rock still interested in learning to play guitar. The cherry finish with gold hardward has an especially nice and classy look to it. Weak pickups drag down the experience a touch, but this is a low-end budget instrument. Overall, I'd give the Jay Turser JT50 a 7 out of 10.
