Phoenix Audio is about to launch its new 500 series N90DRC/500 compressor and gate module.

The N90DRC/500 is not that new, for David Rees (Neve) had designed it about 20 years ago but never released it. Shaun Leveque and him reworked on the project and modified its format so that it can fit in an API 500 rack.

The compressor/gate is designed around a VCA control with a discrete Class A input and a transformer balanced Class A output. Described as musical, you’ll have to control it “by ear”, Phoenix Audio adds that it has a wide action range.

The compression curves on the N90DRC/500 use linear detection combined to a logarithmic attenuation within a closed control loop. The gate, though announced as more conventional, features a composite release time with a hold time followed by a fade. This technique allows for classic noise reduction and subtle ambiance changes.

The N90DRC/500 offers separate threshold knobs for the compression and the gate functions, a gain knob, ratio and a “Fast” switch for compression and separate bypass switches.

The Phoenix Audio N90DRC/500 is expected soon and will retail for $800.
