recording preset drum pattern on a BR-600

Hello,
I am brand new to the digital world of recording and recently bought a Boss BR-600, I have been taking baby steps in understanding it and want to record some simple demos for practice, the one thing that i can't seem to find an answer for is how do you record a preset drum pattern? If it is in the manual I must have missed it but i can't seem to find it anywhere,another forum offered up a tip to push the 7/8 button after finding the pattern you want to record then hit record and play at the same time ,the unit will record as it plays, I couldn't get this to work either, I played with the input selection to try to get something to work as well. Any help you could give me would be appreciatted.
