UTILIZATION
Extremely simple to use, this amp is a beast of versatility.
If you want to go from ultra clean to ultra saturated will go somewhere else because here the rate of saturation overdrive depends directly on the gain level on the clean channel.
I work when "old", with the gain set so that the sound is clean if I play light and it starts when I attack cruncher + strong ropes.
For large distos, I appeal to my Jekyll & Hyde (Visual Sound) that fulfills its role.
The manual (downloaded from Laney) is clear and complete but not essential
Also found on the website of Laney: parts list and diagrams. Very useful if something goes wrong and your tech 'lamps did not.
SOUNDS
I play mainly heavy rock, but also covers (classic rock) and GH50l doing very well as its clear that saturated (see above)
My set-up:
My guitar is an Ibanez SZ320MH, the baffle a Framus 212C (vintage 30), all with a few pedals (wah / distortion between the guitar and amp, booster, Equalizer, Chorus, Tremolo, Delay in the loop)
For the crystalline sounds, I pass in an intermediate position on the SZ320MH, which splits the humbuckers. Need more crunch? I stretch in the neck position and bridge. More potato? Allez hop, a bit of a Jekyll & Hyde and go. Occasionally, I'll have to test it with a Start ...
I Overd least because if you want a big saturated, they sacrifice everything that looks like a clean sound on the clean channel (see above). Better to know up front and equipped accordingly (a good overdrive / distortion of your choice).
Overall, this amp sends a nice potato and is ideal for gigs in small to medium room, even with a drummer who does not hold his punches (my master volume is at 3 + and it is enough) .
OVERALL OPINION
Purchased a month ago second hand for 400 euros. A good deal. During the first trial was "snap, crackle & pop" at all storeys seller Retube and did a complete overhaul and now with no problems. My head is another one that is very oriented RH50T "Hi Gain" and I prefer the Laney, who is moderate in + gain.
I would do this choice. Maybe not but I'm looking at a Laney amp in the same vein (JCM800) and the same power range. Meanwhile, I intend to use and maintain at least a few years.
Update 19/02/2007: I bought her twin Musicstore in Cologne. This one came fitted with EL34 home TAD (Tube Amp Doctor) and blah-blah was. I fired them and replaced by JJ6L6GC (thank you switch to adjust the bias) and this is the day and night. The 6L6 has more body and serious. Now I can go live alone: I have a real backup in case one of the two would be in a bad mood
