low output 7 string pickup

DiMarzio DP759 PAF 7Published on 09/28/11 at 07:03
The Dimarzio PAF 7 is another pickup where I wonder why they even bothered making it in a 7 string format. Dimarzio is a modern pickup maker known for their cutting edge pickups made for contemporary music. This means they make a lot of 7 string pickups because thats what people are playing nowadays. There are not many people playing non heavy music on 7 strings so these traditional sounding 7 string pickups are pretty strange to me, but I guess they fill a need. There are not many low to medium output 7 string pickups and this is one of them. This pickup is based on the classic PAF from the 50s. There are not many low to medium output 7 string pickups and this is one of them. This pickup is based on the classic PAF from the 50s. It only has 7k of output which will surprise a lot of 7 string players. Even with the vintage sound this pickup still has all the modern features like 4 conductor wiring that lets you split the coils if you so please. This pickup also has a ceramic magnet which is another modern touch. I think if they had put an alnico magnet in this pickup it would have an even more traditional sound. This 7 string pickup is very clean sounding and has a lot if definition from string to string. Because the output on this pickup is pretty low it does not sound harsh at any point in the frequency range. This pickup is very clear even with the low output. You need a lot of clarity when you have an extended range guitar. I usually recommend active pickups for extended range guitars but this pickup works well if you want a lower output sound. The mids are a bit dialed back but everything else is nice and clear without sounding harsh. If you have a 7 string and are looking for a low to medium output pickup for your guitar this is one of the few out there.

Similar to the Blaze Neck

DiMarzio DP759 PAF 7Published on 03/28/11 at 14:00
The DiMarzio PAF 7 is basically a tweaked Blaze Neck. Instead of the adjustable pole pieces on both coils, this pickup has slugs on one coil, adjustable screw heads on the other, a ceramic magnet and four conductor wiring.

DiMarzio basically offers two pickup for those wanting a medium output pickup – the DiMarzio Blaze Neck and the DiMarzio PAF 7. Both of these pickups, however, are fairly similar in their tone and EQ curve. The biggest difference between the two is that the PAF 7 is a bit cleaner sounding and has more note definition. Given that the PAF 7 is lower output, this really isn’t a surprise. The high end is crisp enough without sounding too harsh, the mids are pushed...…

Given that the PAF 7 is lower output, this really isn’t a surprise. The high end is crisp enough without sounding too harsh, the mids are pushed back a little bit for clarity and the low end is boosted ever so slightly just to help keep everything in check.

The one thing I really wish this pickup had was an Alnico 5 magnet. That would really help this pickup sound more organic than it currently does. As it stands, it’s pretty much a PAF Pro variant for the seven string market. It has some compression going on, but it still retains its picking dynamics like most other low output pickups out there. It’ll mate with any wood you throw at it, so there should be no issues when it comes to installing it in your favorite seven string guitar.

If you’re looking for a lower output pickup in the seven string DiMarzio world, you pretty much have to choose between this or the Blaze Neck. Both pickups deliver a great tone, and I really don’t think you can go wrong with either one if you’re looking for a very clean and fairly open sounding pickup. Personally, I’d probably run the Blaze Neck in basswood and the PAF 7 in mahogany, but that’s just me. If you find yourself needing a bit more output than the PAF 7, check out the Blaze Neck. The same is true in reverse.

I use it for several months on Munky APEX2 (Ibanez)

In neck: its hot hot hot prcis trs, trs clear of "too much" distorted, and it brlant super musical, pretty silky timbre!

In bridge: same quality as the neck, it restores great treble bridge ct more violent.

It was very easy "sound" with these pickups!
