1 Is PCI bound to disappear?
With all the new formats coming up on the audio market (USB 2.0, firewire, PCMCIA):

huh?

usb 2.0 SHOULD have a higher bandwidth, but it is not completly true. The need of a controller for usb keeps it from reaching top speed.
benchmark tests also proove firewire to be much more stable and reliable because devices communicate peer-to-peer.

with this said, it is easy to understand why professional audio interfaces are prefered via firewire.

USB 2.0 appears to have a higher bandwidth than firewire but bench tests prove otherwise. USB 2.0 has a higher "burst rate" than firewire, but over a sustained period of data transfer, firewire is faster.
