1 Recording electric guitar tracks with adobe audition 3.0

ok heres the thing. i just started using adobe audition 3.0 and when i try to record a track with my electric guitar the sound waves in and out. like from hi volume to next to no volume. how do i fix this problem?? it is drivin me crazy. im just not use to a program as involved as this one. im used to simple recording software like audacity. does it have something to do with the recording levels or what? if that is the case then where in the world do i fix it. someone plzzzzzz help me.
