22 Décember 2004 to 04:16min spec for recording on emac
#1
i'm a poor student studying at music college at the mo, and i wana start recording my stuff, i really like the mac, and heard good things about them. but i was wondering what is the min spec i need, for good quality recordings?
also what other hardware do i need? I'll be using garageband as its no there already (that any good?) also will i need a soundcard upgrade?
and finally for electric guitar is it better to di, and use digital effects, or mic up the amp? (my practice amp is v nasty, and doesn't sound too great, its marshall 10watt solid state).
thanks in advance for your help guys

I don't know about mac but I think you'll have to buy new soundcard.
About your guitar: Yes your amp has preaty ugly sound (I had the same amp). You have two choices new amp or good guitar preamp. Some digital effects has preaty good sounds if you record directly on computer but they are expensive too.

Yeah I have a Fender 30 back home (30 watt valve, only about 1500 made!) That has a v sweet sound, but its too big to lug down to uni, so I guess I'll have to invest in a preamp, maybe a pod/berhinger?
Also for portability I was tihnking of staying with win xp and getting a laptop instead, how easy are laptops to upgrade compared with pcs? And would it be cheaper to buy one from scratch, get a cheap one and then upgrade parts, or get a new top spec laptop?
Thanks

You can not upgrade laptop very much. You can only buy some ram, other devices must be pluged in to usb ar firewire. I suggest you Pc. It is cheap and easy to upgrade.
I think berhinger has good preamps.

yeah, looking at prices its a lot cheaper. I will only be wanting to record electric & acoustic guitar, bass and vocals, just get some drum loops. maybe up to 3 diff tracks at once. I was thinking about the audiophile 2496, and getting a behringer v-amp pro as a modelling amp.
I was looking at a 2.8/3 Ghz P4, 512/1028 RAM, 80GB HD with a seperate 120GB for the audio tracks, is this overkill for what I need? I might also use some synth stuff with a midi keyboard.
Any suggestions?
thank for you help!

almost? what would you change?
I have also looked at the m-audio firewire 410, a lot more expensive but more inputs, will the audiophile suffice for guitar and mic together and then layering the the rest on seperate tracks?

If you won't do with sampled sounds is 1Gb ram enough otherwise buy aditional 1Gb.
I suggest you m-audio OMNI STUDIO! It already has 2 preamps and it has 6 in and 6 out! I think that is best solution.
And I suggest you big monitor, becouse you'll need it for mixing.
