- Made in China, but settled at Epiphone USA.
- Bridge Gibson type bridge as opposed to Fender. Three large screws to adjust the height of the bridge and the string action and a jumper by screws to adjust intonation.
- Mechanical tulips like Fender.
- Set-Neck, 20 frets.
- A micro Epiphone "Electar" low impedance, located in the middle position, favoring a balanced sound.
- One volume, one tone, plus a 3 position switch Varitone, hence its name, which acts on the pitch.
The features and finishes are very good for the price.
UTILIZATION
- The handle has a fairly consistent thickness and width is very thin, it is very pleasant and quick to play. It is further (although it, basically it's just a matter of taste ...) really very pretty with its bearings pearl trapezoid typical Gibson / Epiphone.
- Ergonomics is special because it is an electro-acoustic. The body is very wide and thick, so it needs to be done when one is accustomed to a solid body bass. It suffers from a large imbalance in strap: The body is hollow and very light while at the opposite head is heavy. We must therefore think of never letting go of the stick lest the low drop immediately. It sucks, but we made it, it's just a matter of habit.
- Access to the treble is very good, considering the shape of the instrument.
- For sound, it's the same philosophy than a Precision Bass: One branch, it sounds.
SOUNDS
Although quite typed '60 and '70, the sound is pretty happening everywhere. The sounds are truly vintage, and the three positions are usable Varitone. The position "50" gives enough sounds fine and well defined and rich treble and high mids (for soloists, jazz and all styles that do not require a big bass sound). Position "250" which is my favorite gives a balanced sound across all frequencies, strong and clear (used for pop, rock, soul, blues ...). Position "500" delivers a very fat, very rich low mids and bass, but much less defined than the other two (typed rather heavy rock, where the clarity of sound is not a priority ...)
Overall, whatever the position of Varitone, the sound is deep, rich, always interesting.
I play on a Markbass Little Mark III and a Markbass 104HF or a small Fender Rumble 112.
It sounds, in one as in the other, even if I'm falling in love with the HP 12 'of Fender, yet four times less expensive than the Markbass ...
There is no sound that come out of this bass that can not love, I think ...
OVERALL OPINION
I use it for several weeks, and I must say it convinced me when I tried it. By his looks, his character and its sound is really a bass part.
I tried and owned a bunch of Solid body (Fender, MusicMan, Warwick, G & L, Lakland ...) but it is useless to compare other Casady bass as it is different.
The feature I like most is the sound that goes well ... And it looks too much class ...
