Purchased to replace an aging Digi 001 through use in my home / project studio. It is connected to a Mac Pro 8-core (second generation) with 12GB of RAM. Recordings are made in ProTools and a dedicated fast disk 1 TB connected internally (SATA). In most cases and for most users, the Digi 002 is fitted satisfactorily and allows recordings of excellent quality without using the additional gear. But for my part I wanted to push the possibilities a little further made especially for "critical" (voice, acoustic instruments), which is why I use external preamps (Focusrite ISA and / or Mindprint Envoice Mk I) better than those fitted to the Digi 002 and above equipped with excellent AD converters and digital output (S / PDIF and ADAT) to avoid the Digi converters which work certainly adequate but not extraordinary. Output I use a Presonus Central Station that allows me to select different plays and juggling different sources, particularly useful to avoid latency when monitoring Digi while shooting.

UTILIZATION

Most of the time my projects are done in ProTools (in order of updates, versions were used PTLE 7.4 PTLE 8.x, and currently PT9HD PT10HD), but I also occasionally used Logic Pro 8 and Ableton Live 8. The drivers I was never posed problems (except perhaps those of the 9HD which were a bit tricky). No worries regarding updates either, except the price asked by Avid extravagant enough to move from 8LE to 9HD (which, remember, was the first version to be able to use the HD without all have dedicated hardware), and then to the 9HD 10HD ...
I did not do any tests to see how many tracks it is possible to reach before the machine is on his knees asking me pardon, because I do not see the interest in my case. My projects often do not exceed 24 tracks 24bits/48KHz (I'm old school), I think the most I can remember is reaching 33 tracks without the slightest concern, so far theoretical possibilities of PT10HD which are 256 tracks in 24bits/48KHz ...
The issue of latency is however the biggest flaw of this interface is not better than other interfaces much cheaper, and for this price you can find better (eg RME). But this is a false problem in my case since I bypass using my Central Station, and it can also be solved if you use a console ... But there is also the "Low Latency Monitoring" ProTools allows to comfortably work with this interface.

GETTING STARTED

Trouble-free installation particular configuration clear, no incompatibility encountered manuals and more comprehensive in scope, you die! We see here that Avid / Digidesign is firmly rooted in the professional market, nothing is left to chance. Flawless on that side ...

OVERALL OPINION

I use my Digi 002 since 2006, before that I used its predecessor, the Digi 001 since 1999! My choice was on these interfaces especially because I was using ProTools studio for several years. So, I have not really tried anything else, since I wanted to use THAT ProTools and it did not turn solely on the interfaces Avid / Digidesign. This problem is more topical today because ProTools is quite capable of running on any interface, whatever its manufacturer. So I'm not sure I would do this choice today, because at the same price, you can find much better! UAD Apollo example or Apogee, RME or a ...
