Snarling Dogs SDP-1 Tweed E. Dog

This is a tube overdrive emulator made by Snarling Dogs. I haven't used more than a few of their pedals but I'd have to say overall that I'm not always that impressed. This pedal has a few different features from most but is ultimately a digital replica of an analog sound. It can't be edited through any kind of PC or Mac and has no MIDI capabilities. It's also not rackable as it's a foot pedal. There is an option for a 9V adapter.

UTILIZATION

The editing of this pedal is pretty cool, it has a unique set of parameters for a pedal of this type. There are three knobs, one for volume, one for overdrive/distortion, and one for tone. The tone knob can be bypassed on the side of the pedal by flipping a switch. There is also an attack control, with two modes, labeled snarl and bite. The bite is a quicker attack. The manual explains this all quite clearly.

SOUND QUALITY

This is quite honestly not a great pedal. It's cheap, but it sounds it too, and that just doesn't cut it for me. First of all, it's supposed to be an overdrive pedal, but it doesn't sound anything like overdrive. Even on the low volume settings, it sounds like a weak distortion, not an overdrive. It doesn't sound anything like a tube overdrive either. It's way too heavy but it doesn't have a nice sound for that either. Like the distortion is better at coloring the sound than providing some actual power, it actually weakens the sound once it goes through. I don't know why I expected a digital emulator to actually be a solid recreation of a tube overdrive, but I shouldn't have.

OVERALL OPINION

While this is a great price, I don't think it's better than a tube screamer, which is usually only about thirty or forty bucks more than this nowadays. I don't really know if this pedal is worth it at all, it's got a pretty noisy, weak signal that doesn't really sound much like a tube overdrive at all. It'd be one thing if it had a good sound otherwise, but it doesn't really. So I'd have to give a thumbs down on this one, if you're serious about getting good tone, go with a real tube overdrive, or anything with real tube or analog technology, it'll almost always be better than this.

This is a pedal to the old analog, quality components, unique look (too) big box brushed aluminum electro harmonix way, with ergonomic slant, jacks and 9v power supply in the right places for a pedal board. hatch for easy battery access. Chicken head knobs for easy pushing foot. It lacks the rubber pads.

UTILIZATION

this version has no tone control, but in fact it does serve no purpose here.
A volume, a distortion and a flat switch snarl / bite to restore via pep in fact a kind of trebble bleed that bypasses the high frequencies that go to take the lead hand. The switch is actually a choice rhythm / lead. This is seen very well becuase you can actually have all the sound without much filter, tone then being managed from the guitar.

SOUND QUALITY

the promise is to give the famous grain Fender Tweed distorted (bassman, field, deluxe in this series) with 6L6 pushed to background. The least we can say is that it is successful!
As a preamp, the volume really sets the tone and focus, there is the reserve. More output volume is high, the switch is more efficient and juicy overdrive. The overdrive is almost imperceptible before 12am, but fenderien made this clear sound dirty nothing convincing. Beyond that, it is still soft and we arrive at the desired crunch until the last quarter, which gives the best with further escalation. The grain is simply fantastic, the sound is alive, soft and juicy to perfection, great in the genre because not too compressed like pedals simulating a Marshall stack. This is THE big sound for a good shuffle to a SRV Strat. No more breath with another pedal. Friends of the blues, this pedal is a joy. Made equally fabulous on a Les Paul, with a crunch necessarily stronger.

The big advantage of this preamp is that once you turn down the guitar volume, clarity returns without treble loss without loss of attack or of the very general tone lamps. Really stunning.

OVERALL OPINION

a flat, stomp had really suffered from its former owner and I had to replace it because the sound disappeared all or part ... The jacks are also a little cheap but still hold.
Overall, this is a pedal pretty wild as his dog logo with red eyes suggests (saw LEDs!) And it will tame to get the best because it is actually a preamp that an overdrive. But the result of the sound is really convaicant Tweed E. Dog and this will stay on my pedal board for a good time. Since the sound is very distinctive, it will not suit everyone but obviously in vintage overdrive blues genre, there are plenty of green pedals, blue or yellow that will be able to get dressed. I do not know the new price, but I'm really happy to be dropped on this secondhand.

Excellent vintage pedal, which has a crunchy / punchy we love, and in addition has a wild look.

UTILIZATION

It could not be simpler: an overdrive, plus a switch to move to a sound with more gain, attack, "bite".

SOUND QUALITY

Overdrive / distortion typical very 70's, Analog, recalling the sound of Fender tube with saturated channel. The sound is excellent for a good crunch, and for which the lead fish.

OVERALL OPINION

I have this pedal for many years, and I love it. It is part of my set for a good rock slamming. I have had many pedals overdrive / distortion / fuzz, and this one is really at the top. With my Ibanez (JS1200) or my Telecaster (Baja), it really does.
