Virtual Decadence
Published on 11/14/06 at 02:20
Well I decided to talk about this tool which is inseparable from my home studio for several years now.
With the V3 firmware, compatibility Gearbox Software (replacing Line 6 edit) I like especially since I also have a Tone Port UX2 (which I use for bass and vocals), good Mac held the driver, Core Audio USB (at least more stable than the POD Toneport Mac) .. I love her already short as a simulator amp / fx sound card but it is not bad either.
And then only able to save (if you wish) that her untreated is a real plus.
I pilot FCB1010 MIDI pedal with an Bérangère from home (but recently modified the firmware .. Unofficial much better for the POD XT to manage stombox or my opinion on the pedals).
UTILIZATION
Plug'n'play's all ... ergonomics requires about 2 minutes learning to see everything.
The manual is useful for:
- Read the excellent short articles that describe the original model which was inspired by Line 6
- See the tables set for a MIDI pedal, a control surface or a sequencer (note: the manual that came a little dated, the various firmware updates have added a lot of things that need to get the latest version PDF).
SOUND QUALITY
FX Levels: Like many here, I'm not a fan of distos base. At the same time, the settings do drive some amps that I do not need to have a big rock sound (not metal .. but still saturated).
And then the V3 firmware (téléchageable free) still has added some nice pedal for a solo boost.
The modulations are nice. In addition to my model pack "FX Junkie" in add-on and there I have full psyches of many ...
I use my sounds to most Clean pop / Crunchy (typically one of the Telecaster / Gretsch simultaneously in the Blackface Fender or Vox AC30TB), especially the tremolo and with this combination I have the sound of my dreams for rhythmic brit-pop , arpeggios, tablecloths ... especially since I use my Variax 600 and the top shows the consistency of all Line 6.
The delay and reverb are really not bad. I use sparingly in essentially repeats (never registered or I prefer to put these effects and modulations in Logic).
Among the stomp, we find distos but the compressors (in fact it's annoying to have to choose)? I like the compressor VETTA for those who like good sound compressed. Other models too.
I love the original Wah (of the VETTA) but added the V3 models offer varied and fun on that side too ... not take more ...
EDIT: in response to remarks made by mail on the dynamics. Yes, I voice clear differences with a real tube amp when I play solo all alone in my corner. I did a test with the same guitar (Variax), a fender tube amp and pod set best to imitate it. In listen carefully, it looks like the POD Xt always compress the sound too. But nothing insurmountable.
It is still possible to fine-tune all settings (compressor, mic EQ ...) to get closer to a pure sound ... it takes time, it's surgery. It can be boring for a beginner, also boring to scratch the base but for someone looking for a home studio tool in the palette as broad as possible, there is no better.
Many who have renounced the scratch POD saying is shit Digital have not made the effort to pass the time it takes.
If not a mix, I frankly amazed many by saying that it was modeling guitar and amp .. I accumulate evil points for discussion between purists mundane .. but sorry, the music for me is not just a single electric guitar.
There remains the problem of aggressive high-pitched sound on stage ... Once again we must look to the power amps that are worth.
So we will say studio tool: 10/10
What I notice about AF is that critics of the POD or more generally of modeling always say "presets" do not ring. Hey guys ... all tube amps that I had never had a preset, I tried to settle myself, for my style, for my guitars .. presets should change them with sound your gear and your game ...
OVERALL OPINION
I use it for 3 years at least.
What I like most: the sounds Soldano, Fender Twin and AC30TB Voc / Blackface. Ergonomics, Gearbox Software (and the ability to save presets on the computer and switch between the Toneport and POD XT), the possibilities of working his infinite expansion possibilities (even if they are paying) The policy of free upgrade from Line 6, the ability to manage everything via MIDI, the quality of the USB driver on the Mac.
What I like least: the distos, compulsory choice between distos and compressors, Mesa Boogie sound, the JCM800 (because I have a real sounding better and can make sounds that claris chuad n is not the case for their model .. same time, few people looking for a clear sound in a Marshall ). Not much really. Oh yes ... ON A POSSIBILITY OF ITS TOO .. it could be a drawback.
If something pisses me off: I am a subscriber to GuitarPort Online tonport on my subscription and will not work if I use my POD XT. Chipotte but hey you there ...
Oh ... and pius I want to pay me the model pack that adds all the sounds of POD XT BASS ... major drawbacks for my wallet.
And those who say to the live sounds should be reviewed to avoid a screaming sound effects are right. Now I think I'll fall for one of its power amplifiers suitable as the Tech 21 or 60 Poweramp Atomic Reactor 112-50, which will be released soon.
For rock influenced 50's, 60's, 70's, punk rock (the real thing not Blink), the English rock-pop ... anything that uses more of vintage gear, the POD XT is ideal for not being shit (and kill the amp back with suitcases and pedal) for a stunning result, despite what the fundamentalists from analog.
For sounds metal / industrial / nu-metal modern ... I can not say.
I just record some rhythm tracks for a friend rather prog rock to Pink Floyd and I think it sends the wood ... But I use the drive simultaneously with the Soldano half race ... and I have a well powerful and thick (but the effect of double tracking that). I'm sure I can get a sound to the Ministry refining.
With experience ... well I can do without so yes I will redeem it. At the same time for the home studio, I have almost all the sounds I use most in the Toneport (but I had the POD XT when I bought the Toneport).
