The SE Electronics Ribbon R-1 is a unique recording microphone that should only be used inside the studio.  It isn't meant for any other purposes and like all ribbon mics, it is fragile and needs to be handled with care.  However, the capsule is a unique and is labeled a 'dynamic ribbon' capsule.  The mic comes with the shock mount shown and it has a figure eight pick up pattern, meaning it will pick up sound on both sides of the mic.

OVERALL OPINION

I've only used the SE Electronics Ribbon R-1 a few times for recording and I think I've used it enough to be able to say that I'm a fan of this mic.  It has an interesting sound that isn't quite like any ribbon microphone out there because of the unique 'dynamic ribbon' capsule.  I have used the mic on vocals and on electric guitar and have found it to be a good mic suitable for both of these applications.  I have used it both up close on a guitar amp and a few feet back, both with pretty great results.  I like the way it sounds because it isn't like a traditional ribbon mic and it gives me a unique flavor.  I haven't used the mic for any other applications that I can think of, but I'm sure that I will try it out on some other instruments when I am able to and I'm sure that I will get good results, as this is just a good overall sounding mic.  Of course it will sound better for certain applications, but this is to be expected and it is just a matter of finding what will work best for you and the sound that you are going for.  The price of the mic isn't cheap as far as home studio mics go, but it is reasonably priced for sure.  If you are looking for a sweet sounding ribbon mic, definitely try out the SE Electronics Ribbon R-1.
