Fun!

Korg Volca SamplePublished on 11/26/14 at 08:43
(This content has been automatically translated from French)
16 steps sequencer samples (not "sampler"!). Editable parameters for the section, the pitch, and AMP of the sample.
Analog isolator (high-pass filter and low-pass somehow), reverb effect, reverse, loop, step jump, swing, tempo ...
Stereo mini-jack output. Midi in, sync-in and sync out via mini-jack with the other volca. Walk with batteries and DC 9V power.
The machine has 4MB of memory (up to 65sec total sample / max 100 samples) with a sampling rate of 31.25 kHz, 16 bit. Samples can only currently be transferred through the iOS app, but a SDK is available.

UTILIZATION

The interface is fairly intuitive and fun while it happens that one takes the fingers in tiny knobs and change some settings unintentionally. Despite this, it quickly takes its brands and quickly gets to compose beats too disgusting.

The analog isolator is cool to make drops and transitions (high-pass filter and low-pass somehow). Otherwise it can be used as a master EQ.
The song mode is a good addition over previous volca to create longer patterns and make changes.
Swing allows more rhythmic variety and can be transmitted to former volca.
The reverb sounds good. This unique reverb that can be attributed to the desired samples. It can not on the other hand not be "breaded", which means it will always be central even if "pan" the sample on one side. The knob reverb is basically just a knob Wet / Dry.
LOOP mode by reducing the length of a sample to a few milliseconds to get the equivalent of an oscillator, thus creating bass / lead / etc then playing on the attack / decay and the pitch.
All parameters except tempo / swing / reverb / analog isolator can be automated.

The iOS app does not allow for the time that the transfer of a sound at a time; it is not possible to program several sounds to a single transfer session. Knowing that the transfer of a minimum sound takes 14-15 seconds, it can be quite restrictive.

SOUNDS

The sound is very good despite the sampling frequency of 31.25kHZ / 16bit. Perfectly usable live, the transferred samples emerge intact from the machine.
The analog isolator is a great addition and allows to give color to the compo.
Nice reverb that gives depth (as we expect from a reverb). As stated previously, the knob reverb knob is only a dry / wet and the diffusion time (about 2 seconds) can not be changed.

A critical of the breath is the same caliber at least that old volca, which means that if you hope to use the sounds individually created in your prod, he'll have to play with the gate or the RX3 (or RX4 now) to remove the breath. The reverb also tends to accentuate it. In a live against use by this poses no problem.

Demos:
Below 2 quick demos made entirely with volca sample with the full composition of sessions (as the "making of") to outline the possibilities of "tweakage." Everything was recorded live without any changes, cutting, or adding plug directly into Ableton Live. All samples used were those pre-stored in the base machine.

Also below a title that shows the breath of volca sample when it is used as a component in a production. The drums, bass loop throughout the prod, the female voice, piano from the sample volca (factory samples). Despite a good deal of gate and RX3, breath is always present ...:

OVERALL OPINION

Living in Japan, I had the chance to get the Korg volca sample from marketing in October 2014. The price is above all extremely affordable considering the possibilities.
It's a very nice machine for live or to compose original ideas when you are on the go and then refine them home in his DAW.
In my view, take the sample as a machine volca old returning to the origins of samples sequencer, not a machine at the cutting edge of technology: it gives it a certain charm.
