Gibson SG

Epiphone Pierced SGPublished on 10/04/10 at 15:00
This is an SG ''faded yellow'' all-mahogany 4-string, short scale.

I was considering replacing my SG-Supreme with this regular SG, as I really dig mahogany basses ..... but I did not buy it. I found it at Parkway Music in Clifton Pk NY for $600.

http://www.parkwaymusic.com

It's just like my SG-Supreme [see other review] except that it's ALL mahogany, where the SG-Supreme is half maple. The faded yellow finsh looks great, and it has that cool mahogany sound.

Nothing to dislike. I just didn't find reason enuf to trade. The Supreme is a bit brighter than my ''ideal'' and this particular yellow SG was close to exactly my tone, but the Supreme's extr…

Nothing to dislike. I just didn't find reason enuf to trade. The Supreme is a bit brighter than my ''ideal'' and this particular yellow SG was close to exactly my tone, but the Supreme's extra brightness is not unmanageable, there was no other special quality of the regular SG that proved to be a ''must have'' .... so I took a pass on it. If I actually needed a pair, I definitely would have bought it. It's a handy shade of difference, in my prefered direction [toward mellower].

It's just like the SG Supreme [see other review] except that it's ALL mahogany.

These SG basses are all about the bridge PU. If they didn't have that hot bridge tone, then Gibson's own Epiphone RumbleKat would fill the bill for a short scale mahogany set-neck bass, and at only half the price [see other-other review].

If you really want a short scale mahogany bass, it would be ideal to have all three in one shop, the regular and Supreme SG's and also the RumbleKat. Why would you want ANY of these Gibson mahogany shorties ? Maybe cuz you want some variety, but you're mainly a ''California Classic'' player and you don't wanna own TOO many basses. For sure, these are all pretty much the opposite of the ''Leo-type'' California-built ash/alder/maple long scale basses from Fender, GandL, or EBMM ..... so you'd get a really noticeable difference.

I"m 40 years old and have decided to take the plunge and learn the guitar, been playing about a month.
Ive always liked the look of an SG but i didnt want to fork out a great deal of money just in case it wasn"t for me.
Influences are Sabbath AC/DC,etc.
So i went out and bought the Gibson/Baldwin sg in cherry red.

I bought this from a local clearence store for 80gbp and blagged free delivery as well.
Bought it because i wanted an SG style guitar but without the pricetag.

It looks the part and sounds decent for a beginners guitar (and thats all it is) dont expect it to sound like a Gibson SG because it doesn"t and never will.

It looks the part and sounds decent for a beginners guitar (and thats all it is) dont expect it to sound like a Gibson SG because it doesn"t and never will.
Vol and tone knobs are smooth to turn, the 3 way switch does what its supposed to do and works just fine.
Chrome hardware looks nice and shiny but dont know how long it would last.
last but not least you get a free dvd and manual plus an allan key for the truss rod (and you will use it)and a guitar lead.
Also comes with a 5 year warranty

Because this guitar is so cheap your gonna have problems. The action is ridiculously high but is easily sorted (did mine in 5 mins)the finish on the body and headstock is a bit thin in places but thats no big deal.
Now to the serious bits, The frets are razor sharp and i would recommend you get them seen to ASAP or else you will rip your fingers to shreds when you slide up the neck,if you dont feel confident to do them yourself take them to a luthier.

Quality control must be very lax in the factory where these are made, the frets are the most serious issue but the rest is very easily rectified.
The bolt on neck seems to fit ok in the body, the 3 way switch seems a little flimsy but does its job.
Dont know what wood this is made from but its advertised as having a solid body and is not heavy at all so quite comfortable on the strap
Neck inlays i suspect are plastic but thats no big deal to me,they look fine.
The finish could be better and i dont think the tuners will last a very long time but the tuners are usually the first thing people change anyway

If you just starting your musical journey by learning the guitar then there are better guitars out there without any of the issues i"ve mentioned above.
If you want an SG style guitar and you have the money then buy an Epiphone SG or better still a Vintage SG which as wilkinson hardware and set necks
Having said that once the fret issues are sorted then you would have a very nice guitar for learning on.
Please bear in mind that the fret issue needs addressing ASAP which would make the warranty void if you did it yourself or took it to an unauthorised non gibson luthier but is it really worth forking out for shipping to and from the dealer just to get this sorted,to be honest i dont think it is and thats why i"m doing the frets myself plus its a good way to learn the ins and outs of a guitar, its a cheap guitar so no worries if you mess up.

Even with all the issues i"ve mentioned i still love the guitar to bits and it looks like an SG should look and once you get better on it,buy a better quality one and stick this on a stand in the corner of the room to look at as its cool looking.

From Pete's music.For $300. out the door.

It's nice,a good replacement for my dillion sg i gave to a friend.

SG's should smell like cotton candy. But if gibson won't let you do that than i understand.

Nice lightweight guitar pretty white paint block inlay, gold hardwhare.Sound tight too.

Just a real good guitar.

I've been playing for 20 years.
I own a USA 70's strat and mostly play fenders. Orville is a brand of (Gibson Japan).

I bought it at a music shop for $400 US.

It's an Orville (Gibson Japan) 1961/62 SG reissue model.
It's got Japanese pickups that sound pretty good.
The top of the line "Orville by Gibson" models use Gibson USA pickups but mine is just an Orville with Japanese pickups.
It's got a long tenon neck (like on the Gibson historic series) which gives it fantastic sustain.
The sound is very sweet with a lot of sustain.
I'ts a K serial Orville which is often mistaken for being Korean but it really is made in Japan for the Japanese market only.

Not much.

Excellent.
I'm not sure if the finish is really thin poly or nitro.
The finish looks like nitro to me but the plain Orvilles are supposed to be poly with the high end "Orville by Gibson" models being nitro.
The workmanship is top class and is probably better than on a USA Gibson SG.

It's a great guitar with a great tone.
I was going to buy a regular USA Gibson SG until I came across the Orville SG.

Orville (Gibson Japan) started around 1988 and finished around 1998.
They made Les Pauls, SG's, ES 335's Firebirds etc to Gibsons strict specifications for the Japanese market only.

I came upon my SG at a store in london ontario. I paid 600 for the guitar. I bought the guitar because it greatly resembled Angus Youngs signiture SG.

I love how it gives a clear crunch noice, a sound like most of AC{}DC songs. And the smooth wide but not thick neck feels more comfortable than most.

I dont like how the SG makes a harder time to do power cords because of it necks shape , it feels nice but takes more work.

The gibson SG has a very strong and very ballanced body. The smooth curve for the devil like horns creates good impression when youre playing it.

I bought this guitar on ebay for $400 in october 2003, it is a used 1996 SG Special. This is my first electric guitar and i choose it because of its looks and Gibsons great reputation.

There are many things that this guitar does well. It is very light and easy to play with no strain on the back while standing up. It has an amaizing sound provided by the two humbuckers. You can controll the exact sound by selecting either the bridge or neck pickup or both and each pick up has its own seperate volume and tone controlls. You could play probably any style of music you desired on this guitar. One of the nicest things about this guitar is the style. The double cut-away body that looks like devil…

The is not much to not like about this guitar, im going to have to think about this for a minute... The only thing i can think of is that it does not have a tremilo.

All I have to say about the construction and quality about this guitar is that its a Gibson. Your good to it itll be good to you untill the world ends.

The bottom line is its a Gibson: it sounds great, it has great featurs, it looks awsome and its quality.

I quite simply loved the cherry red when I saw it and the shape was so cool its not true. And guess what I am getting next year? The same guitar in either black, white or I might get Gibson to custom make a clear one if they don’t already do one.

Well what I like about it is easy. The colour is perfect for a rock guitar, the shape is perfect and then there are the tunning pegs which blow me away as you probably know instead of being six in a row they are three on the top and three on the bottom. Which I know a lot of guitars have but that doesn't mean I don’t love and shouldn't love it. What else do I like erm... The pick ups look pretty cool. Which ever way you cut it, it has to be when you turn up some where to have a band practise or any where like that and every one gets out there strats and pasiffica's and get to pull out an sg and every one is like "Wow Doug when you have finished do whatever you are doing can I have a really quick go please, please, please"

The only thing that I would say is that if you spend most of your time playing chords on it test it hourly before you buy one cause ten out of ten times I will still pick my strat to plays chords. But when it comes to power chords and solos I prefer the sg. It is so good that a vibrato sounds better when played on a strat.

The construction of the sg is amazing when I got my strat I spent hours adjusting every aspect to how I wanted it but when I bought my sg it was simply perfect. Since I bought got it I haven’t even had to tighten a screw anywhere on it.

It is a great guitar i can see why all legends have one i Would just like to say thanks to Westfield for making such a great guitar and to my Dad a mate James for helping me choose it. O yer and BUY ONE !!!

apart from the gold coloured hardware that looks a little cheap its a solid good quality guitar...and can take a beating..and stays in tune all the time...the pickup selector switch has no snap and flips too easily ..

the fiery red paint really brings out the guitar. it is small with edges that are cut off( i dont konow what its called because i am a numb bum).

It looks and (for the most part) feels like a Gibson SG. It's fairly light, great finish to it. I get a great sound out of it. I bought this guitar to learn how to play on...and so far, it hasn't really let me down. I wanted to learn how to play AC/DC mostly, and when you hear the exact sound that you hear on an album come out of your guitar....well, it's very encouraging during the sometimes stressfull and tedious learning process.

The tuners suck. This thing seems to go out of tune every three days. ( I play for at least an hour every night). I brought a friend of mine who I think is a guitar god...he's quite good...to play the top 5 guitars I wanted to buy. He liked the SG....but he told me to buy the SG 310 instead...it was only $70 Cdn more, and he said the tuners where night and day better. I guess he was right. But really, I don't mind tuning it frequently. In fact, I think it's good *ear* practice for me anyway. But if you're not a beginner, I think the tuners would be too frustrating for you.

Also, I found the strings that came with is to bee far too soft.

Solid. nothing more to say. I've heard about switch problems...but in he 1 month that I've had it....say the 50 hours that I've spent on it, I've never had a single issue with any of the controla other thant the tuners.

$199 and you can sound, pretty much, just like your favourtie musician!! Any better way to learn guitar? I haven't seen it yet! This is a really....really...smart buy for a new guitar player.

The main problem is the way the strap fits, causing a "top heavy" effect which makes playing standing up quite stressful and can cause increased hand-ache. Also I find that when played acousticly there is a very tinny sound to the guitar, but i suppose it is an electric after all.

Quite a good guitar and well worth the money, however a squier strat might be better value for money, it dependson which kind of sound you want, SG is good for rocky-treble.

the guitar is easy to dent and the pick up selector is down the bottom (not as easy to access to cut out sound)

the guitar is very wll made and has a brilliant finish to it.

this guitar is worth the buy. it will be in your price limit and has the same affect as a lp

Gibson SG

Epiphone Pierced SGPublished on 06/26/01 at 15:00
I got this guitar from a guitar guru/technician I know, he makes his own guitars and sells them to people he knows from word of mouth. He's one of the coolest people I've got to know, he's really interesting. I paid 400 pounds for it...an absolute steal!

Gibson have hit the right spot with the S.G- by producing a great alternative to the common Les Paul and Stratocaster. The neck is smooth and the frets beefy and easy to slide on. It feels silky smooth and the guitar sounds fantastic, it's equipped with Super Humbucking Pickups which makes it very versatile in nearly all departments, I love it

The quality will only improve as it gets older and mine has the single scratchplate which is more sought after. The construction is absolutely flawless, i really can't find anything wrong with this guitar.

Buy one! If for the looks only, the sound is a treat and the guitar just screams to be played. It's going to be a long term investment for me
