The Universal Audio 2-1176 is a dual channel compressor, that although looks a bit different from the original 1176s, is the same in make up and sound. It is an all analog unit that has XLR inputs and outputs and will take up two rack space units in your rack.
UTILIZATION
The configuration of the Universal Audio 2-1176 is very easy to follow, as it has the basic parameters you would expect from a compressor. Each channel has knobs for input level, output level, attack, release, and ratio, as well as a switchable knob to control what you are viewing on the meter. There are then switches in the middle of the two channels to each link the channels or use them separately, and then there is also a bypass switch. I don't have the manual for the Universal Audio 2-1176, but if you have any experience with outboard compressors, you won't need it.
SOUND QUALITY
The sound of Universal Audio 2-1176 is everything you would expect from the 1176. The original 1176 is known as one of the best compressors ever made, and having two of them in one unit is really a special thing. Getting great sounds on a variety of instruments is easy, and this really excels all across the board, ranging from vocals to drums to guitars. The Universal Audio 2-1176 will not disappoint those looking for this classic unit.
OVERALL OPINION
I've been using the Universal Audio 2-1176 for about a year or two and it has never let me down since I started using it. It has a full bodied sound that makes it great for all sorts of applications, and is extremely easy to use. Universal Audio is a leader in the world of outboard gear, and I really trust their gear all across the board. While this isn't exactly a cheap model, it has top notch tone and those looking for that know that it doesn't come cheap. Highly recommended for all interested in getting two classic compressors in one unit.
