Welcome, Happy Puppy!
I din't know anything about Fruity Loops, I just wanted to say hi.
I've tried to figure out Fruitie Loops too. Not much luck. I have Fruitie Loops Express that came with Guitar Tracks Pro. Can't find any help on the internet for express just the latest version of F.L.
You can check out http://www.flstudio.com/ if you buy their product you can have access to some tutorials videos. Just remember that a sample is a part of a pattern that is a part of the playlist.
Sample: sound (cymbal hit, snare, etc.)
Pattern: a pack of samples for a given time frame
Playlist: a pack of pattern that actualy are making the song.
As I'm only used to FL4, I don't know much about FL5 (and express) and recording guitar IN FL since I only used it to make drum track.
If you have any questions go ahead as FL5 is not so different from FL4, it just have the guitar recording thing in it which I never used though. I like to use Adobe audition 1.5 so far to record multi-track stuff.
