Edirol UA-4FX

The UA-4FX is an affordable interface that connects to computers via USB 2.0 port. There are 14 effects that come with it and one of them is great, it is the COSM mic preamp simulator. It also comes with Sonar LE and a plug in that only works with PC computers. I have used this interface on a Windows XP laptop 32 bit and it worked fine. Setting it up was a breeze and all of the recordings and playback that I got out of it were very high quality. You can also use this interface with a Mac computer but I have heard that there are issues when using the included plug in on a Mac.

UTILIZATION

If you are an XP user you can use the Surround Sound function (S/PDIF) output but this is only for a PC Windows XP user. I am not sure why this function isn’t available to more systems though. The effects are one of my favorite parts with it.

GETTING STARTED

There is a multi band compressor and limiter to use on master tracks that sound really good and I would take them over any standard compression and limiters that come with a software or DAW. Plus it has the basic reverbs and delays/distortions for a guitar.

OVERALL OPINION

Being that this software works great with XP and is shaky on a Mac it really depends on what system the user has and if they want to put up with the headaches that could arise (for Mac users). If you are a Windows user I recommend using this and even working in the Dolby Digital surround sound with it, you can do some great stuff if you are into working with film. If you are a Mac user, I would probably hold off until they figure out what is going on with the compatibility issues.

First with a laptop I bought in 2007 this card for its price and Roland who was acclaimed to AF. I just wanted the computer music. I always use a PC with i7. Quite sufficient to read all my tracks with Reaper.

UTILIZATION

I finally opted for Asio4all rather than the driver Roland. I go down to 6.5 ms quiet Core i7 with Reaper, reading a dozen vst (not freezes) and playing it. I can get down to 4ms (2 and 2), but I'd rather have a little leeway in case ...
I decided to give my opinion after the nth time played live yesterday, or Pianoteq Lounge Lizard, on my laptop (Toshiba Dual Core 2007 ...). The card plugged in for 6 hours, has not issued a crack with 12 ms latency and a microphone supplied with 48V connected to it (USB 1.1 yet!) ...

OVERALL OPINION

Used since the spring of 2007, this is my first map, and it is impeccable reliability. I really do not see why I would put money on another card! Bravo!

The price was affordable to the outlet, and begin to touch sound is not bad.
USB 1.1 breaks everything (latency deplorable, few tracks ....)

UTILIZATION

The drivers are stable but heavy for so few features
The simple act of recording in stereo and stereo broadcast the return puts the card on the floor (USB 1.1) You just save one or two channels simultaneously, or it loose.

I used it three years before I fly in the live session.
Frankly it was not lépoque top so when I see people trying to buy now ... go your way. Go for a recent and decent interface. Do not hesitate to put extra to get more.

This card is a good "mule" to do everything except coffee. I have an early version, and it should not be 24/96 recording, but that does not bother me (I record in 16/44 or 24/44, this is enough for my esgourdes; never update since the purchase in 2006/2007 (known more!) and still operational. The sound is clean: I plug a boss or my alesis fusion DR RCA rear, a skyscraper in frontage (the hair!) in jack (or jack in tt1: ho hum!) but not both, must choose, one rode an M3 or on the side AT2020 XLR (activation of the PSU fantom impractical below: micro switch); there, nothing to say, it's happiness. I avoid using the tube simulator very "blah" and not convincing at all! integrated effects are pretty gadgets (cancelor voice that has the name, but that's not why I bought it, correct reverb, especially for the price, but a little tatouillant you do get a good guitar sound (a preamble Fishman prefix on custom cort, a marvel, and a otherwise, the Takamine "Cooltube" or voix.En fact, with good "sources" as input, it does very good job, especially for its price therefore. front headphone practice.

UTILIZATION

Very stable drivers (Win XP SP3 32Bit 2ghz proc and 2 gig ram) (Zero problem if we know a little control), cubase essentiel4, latency inaudible to 44 (in 96 I do not know what it is and those which make the qualitative difference of taking his sound to the ear aliens!). Output is connected to the Edirol MA7A amplified by RCA. No use in noon (so no opinion on this) but has I / O).
