The Tascam US 1641 was the first audio interface I bought when I wanted to get into digital recording with my computer. I was running it with a Hewlett Packard lap top with a 3 Ghz processor and 2 GB of RAM and using Cubase SX as a sequencer. It has eight XLR input based pre amplifiers and then has eight more ADAT inputs and outputs and also has a AES/EBU connections.


UTILIZATION

Setting up the US 1641 was quick and painless. I had no compatibility issues and was able to have the unit up and running with my machine within minutes. The general configuration of the unit is simple and easy to follow, which makes it easy to manipulate and to learn what everything does. The manual is complete and through and is useful when setting up and using this audio interface.


GETTING STARTED

I ran the US 1641 with Cubase SX without any problems. The drivers were stable and are updated pretty often. I was able to record without any latency, as this machine does all of its processing within the unit, freeing up space on my computer. I was able to record at least ten tracks at once, sometimes more, which has more to do with my computer I think, but being as fast as this interface is, it definitely helps to run everything quickly and smoothly.


OVERALL OPINION

I bought the US 1641 about four years ago, but I have since switched to a Pro Tools based system with a different audio interface. The reason I switched had nothing to do with this unit, as I think this is better than the audio interface I have now - a Digidesign Digi 002 rack version. The reason I switched was simply because I need to run Pro Tools. If you don't use Pro Tools, this is one of the best home studio audio interfaces you can get. The preamps aren't the best sounding, but are definitely usable and will get a pretty clean sound. One of my favorite parts about this is the metering, as it is extremely clear and looks great! This interface worked great for me while I had it, and if I could run Pro Tools with it, I would still have it. Highly recommended for those looking to put together a computer based home studio with an audio interface like this one.

The value for money and of course many neighboring motivated my purchase. and I'm not disappointed.

OVERALL OPINION

I use it for 4 months 10 hours per week

With 8 mic preamps, 2 line entered / instruments entered plus 4 lines, one SPDIF input (Chinch) and MIDI I can record just about anything with.
Output side, the card includes two stereo outputs (or 4 mono), the first two channels are also monitor and headphones (with independent volume control).
This card can also work in stand-alone.

I uttilise a little while (microphones, electric guitar, pedal released in SPDIF, ext ...) on a laptop lambda (Win, dual-core proc, 4GB RAM)

UTILIZATION

The drivers are extremely stable, the only problem when the PC and "forgets" that it is connected to the card ... in this case simply power cycle the card (3sec) and everything working again properly. No problems during recording.
I'm already gone up to 14 track simultaneous recording with no problem.
No problem either for playing a stereo and two mono tracks during or next recording.

I use Cubase 5 with generally but also serves as a focal point of all my audio system that is as much for everything that is read on TV that the PC goes into stand-alone on the map.

Latency is low or nonexistent (I know but I can not really play with an amp simulator without any gene).

Incompatibility with linux (well, it's not like Linux OS was a well-known in the audio but it's frustrating to not be able to have my card and then when I boot my monitorings Linux ....)

OVERALL OPINION

I use it for about six months.
I have not tried other "real" sound cards before, except in the Alesis Multimix Firewire.

What I like most is the versatility of this card that also adapts well to use lambda for models in something that Home Studio recording a full band.
The two faults that I find are the lack of volume with respect to stand-alone (I'm almost forced to push the master thoroughly to have a volume equivalent to a quarter master for what comes out of the pc) and the lack Heat microphone preamps.

The price / quality ratio is very good.

With experience and the same budget, I would remake that choice. Roros with some more, I would take a superior model of another brand to try to overcome this lack of warmth of the meadows-amps.

For what purpose?

Intended to make a home studio for my songs, and pre-production for the next cd of my group

With which instruments or systems (console, preamp, DTD ...) and you use the connection with what? ...

For the moment the guitar preamp with a Marshall JMP1 home. Soon a static microphone preamp with a first prize.</strong>

UTILIZATION

So that is where the worries come.

I can not use ASIO, I have nothing but stalls in SONAR 8 (64 bit) after 2 guitar tracks with AmpliTube VST one above.
Cubase 4 LE, as soon as I put an effect AmpliTube, it cracks.

For the moment, impossible to do anything with ASIO. I did well to update the firmware, but I think (and hope) that it comes from my PC, he left soon to SAV. But strangely, everything works fine in WDM / KS. I will try to elucidate this mystery.

For latency, I let you look at other posts. (And yes ASIO when AC not want ...)

I use it for 2 weeks and I referrer that choice anyway. I consider a very good card as I would not know the source of the problem.
I've used in the past a Line6 Pod Studio GX.

Value for money excellent.

I need 8 preamps and a sound card at the time. I already knew for Tascam's analog consoles and multitrack (DA-88. ..) and I saw that they offered this card, so I jumped on it.

Used with a laptop ACER (Pentium M Centrino 2Ghz and 2GB RAM) running XP never crash that is due to my mistake. With the plugs in line behind and in front before I can record 14 different sources simultaneously. And then I made a headphone and network here.

The preamp has nothing to do with Focusrite RED ONE! It is incomparable. Kept all relativity, the preamps are good
That said earnings preamp are not transcendent either. Potato still missing ... but € 300!

There is a monitor output and 4 outputs and more. What I regret is that the outputs 1-2 are Matchee with the monitor output. So we can make 2 networks headphones but in this case do not connect the plays on Monitor, but the headphone on the front by example. Or find another hack.

UTILIZATION

stable ultrastable! I go down to 5ms by recording 4 tracks at 96kHz and other reading 12-15 at the same time! Ultimately sessions to 30 tracks at 96kHz and not a single drop of pilots; Highway 66!
If your hardware follows behind (minimum 7200rpm HDD), the U.S. 1641 will reward you.

I use Nuendo and I could use with Reason. Apart Protools, nothing should be incompatible, as the ASIO drivers and ASIO2 walk.

GETTING STARTED

By doing things in order and unhurried, there will be no worries.

For example me, for the sake of optimization, I canceled service from XP that I will not. I Gouré line actually. So the drivers do not relocate. Once corrected my mistake, the drivers are installed itself! Update available on the Tascam site for the transition from XP to Windows 7 and if like me you can not find the installation CD.

No need for manual: install drivers, connections of the card, end of install drivers, use. Point.

OVERALL OPINION

I for 2 years. It's been 4 months that I record an album. 10 titles on average 15-20 tracks per session.
Knowing that with the re-re, on the stroke it is currently at 15 tracks but with 3-4 taken whenever it feels pretty hefty sessions. Between 60 and 100 audio files. Over MIDI.

Again if your computer follows, everything will be better in the best of worlds.

The only concern for me now is that the US-1641 is not compatible with Linux, and I intend to use Windows less and less. I just keep a dual boot to have access to VST.

The headphone jack emits only right, it's a shame, I must verify that this is not a hardware failure. But if not behind with 4 outputs, one can tinker with another headphone.

If today I had the same needs and no more money I will ever be the choice. Otherwise, putting aside the price of 2 US-1641 can buy second-hand ': a Multiface 1 preamp and a little better. must know what you need and when.
At the time I was pretty depressed and I did not regretted.
