a must use vst

Rob Papen BluePublished on 07/05/12 at 16:21
Blue by Rob Papen is another installment from Rob Papen and it is classic. There is no way that you wouldn’t like this vst plug in, there just so many different sounds and patches to choose from and use its really amazing. All of the sounds are pretty well made, and nice and thick. Not those thin weak synths that most vst’s come with now a days.

SUITABILITY/PERFORMANCE

Installing this took a little longer than I expected from using other Rob Papen plug ins. The other ones that I have used didn’t take that long at all to install, but maybe this one took longer because it’s a much bigger vst with a heck of a lot more patches to load into your computer.

I did run into some small issues trying to figure some things out with Blue. But I have downloaded a copy of the digital manual when I purchased the software. The price is pretty high though, so don’t expect to get it for cheap. You can still purchase Rob Papen Blue now and its years after it has come out, I really don’t even think they have done any upgrades or edits to it. Or atleast I never got an email from them saying so , so I guess the first time they put it out it worked great.

OVERALL OPINION

The patches are definitely the best thing about this software, also the in program effects. There arent a lot of effects or any effects that will really blow your mind but they will go great with some of the sounds that Blue has. I have been using blue for about 4 years now and still continue to use it off and on depending on what style of song I am producing. I am so happy that I purchased this when it first came out. You will have no issues installing it on your system and you will love the workflow of it. It is a must have for any computer musician.

The install was smooth. No problems then and now problems now. I run a Macbook laptop with Logic8/Mainstage. I had no compatibility problems. I just plug my M Audio Axiom keyboard in and start playing. If you are not familiar with synths and/or computer audio programs, it can be a little tricky. This was actually the first computer synth I had ever used. After a few days of just going through patches (there are a bunch as expected) and randomly tweaking knobs to see what they do, I have gotten a much better grasp of how to use it. Most of the patches sound really good that only a fine tweaking is needed to make it fit your fancy.

I have never looked at the menu, I am sure it will help but at this point I use the synth sparingly so I haven't had the motivation yet. I imagine it is fairly thorough, but these days if you have any questions, its almost easier to find a chat site about whatever it is you are using.

SUITABILITY/PERFORMANCE

I have a Macbook with the intel core duo, 2.2ghz processor, 4 gb ram, 120 gb HD. I use a Presonus FirePod in my studio, a Presonus Firebox when I am mobile and the Internal Core audio in the Laptop when I have to (I don't know the specs on that) and with all configurations this synth works flawlessly. The performance is good. The synth has great sounds and out of my Firebox, has rich textures and good quality lows and highs. So far, this synth has never crashed or gunked up or anything.

OVERALL OPINION

I have been using it for 3 months now. What I like most is the huge quality array of presets. They really are sweet. When live, I almost never tweak them internally because I have a sweet analog effects chain (moog, Diamond, BBE, Analogman) I run it through to get some crazy sounds. I actually got all three of Rob Papens synths (Blue, predator, the other one I can't remember). They were in fact the first computer based synths I ever tried. I plan on collecting more but for now, they work great. It can be hard to spend a couple hundred dollars on software when you can get a pretty sweet hardware synth for the same or a little more. If you are like me and need to be able to write music wherever you are at anytime, then having a great synth in your computer is worth the cash, and yes, I recommend this be one in your arsenal. I would definitely make the same choice again.

There are six oscillators and three types of synthesis (additive and spectral analog), a couple of multi-mode filters, envelopes, nine, four multi-envelopes, three modulation sequencers, a step sequencer, two effects

It is good at sequences of waveforms on a first plane, and probably because there are many - but there are also bass sounds absolutely wonderful.

Lush strings, the sounds are good!
An arpeggiator Genial!
Six oscillators takes the place of honor, and under them are the two filters. It is like Blue LCD is remarkable, however: each of the buttons above shows one page of options, so it is easy access to all functions of blue and, more importantly, to graphically...…

SUITABILITY/PERFORMANCE

Due to all types of synthesis, Blue is sold as a synth "cross-fusion" All these synth engines can be combined, so in theory it is possible to create almost any type of sound you like .

Since it contains all the different types of synthesis and sound that # it is easy to use, it can be considered as something synth "best of"

If you are looking for a Synth "do everything", this is a more than adequate, but if you want to unlock its true power, you'll need a long journey beyond the presets and explore more in depth.

OVERALL OPINION

PC or Mac with at least 1 GHz

Screen resolution of at least 1024 x 768 (SVGA)

VST2.0, AU or RTAS compatible host

Ergonomics is very pretty and easy to take control
the step sequencer built-to terrible lines, the number of oscillators is 7, so a wavetable, and provides tremendous opportunities
routing is complete with a modulation matrix as complete qu'intuiive (which has the albino :-)
filters are enormous! we feel the key is present Rob Papen
CRER pads can be complex as well as a desire groovy sequences
I use it with his little brother, the predator and they complement each other perfectly
the price quality ratio is good because I tried other plugs and either they did not have all the possibilities of blue, or they were very typs and wanted a TRUE creation tool!
I do it again this election again because it gives me a vsti that deserves to be known, and I use in all my prods!
I can not do without!
