Epiphone El Capitan
Published on 06/27/01 at 15:00Bought it retail at Evans Music in Houston, TX. Wanted an acoustic bass to record bass lines behind my acoustic guitar.
$650
The playability is great. I compared it to the acoustic basses in similar price range. The Fender, the Washburn, and this one was hands down my favorite for sound quality and playability.
I think the built in electronics could be a little more upgraded to like a Fishman, but dont get me wrong, they are just fine.
Construction and quality are really nice. It is a very pretty bass. I got the black one with white binding. Great neck.
If I had the money I would go and buy another one in the natural wood. I am really impressed by this one.

Manufacturing Korea, 21 frets, preamp shadow, very bass drum (small jigs refrain) color sunburst, gloss (quite nice)
Channel comfortable, low action very playable, the bass is mounted phosphorus bronze strings.
Aesthetic very friendly, and good overall finish: it is a serious instrument
UTILIZATION
The neck is long (34 "), so that it passes easily from electric to acoustic.
The access is easy to acute (slight bevel on my model).
The box is enormous: probably the largest of the acoustic bass I've ever tried. Pernet this to have a little more sound projection and bass (although in pure sound, it is still faced with a slight folk or 2)

attention, this is a piece to hold in hands sitting, it will, and standing, take the usual (small arms refrain): do not expect to see that you play (sleeve or hand right) when standing as the body is thick!
this tends to hurt the right forearm resting on the edge of the box.
Connected, then there is the slap!
2 seconds by fiddling with the EQ preamp (bass boost, low light and low mid boost hig mid, treble 0) we get a blast of heat, a silky, a velvety amazing!
This immediately opens up new possibilities for gaming, does not sound that my jazz bass. I put 9 in the volume and its connected
SOUNDS
This is exactly what I wanted: a second bass that allows me to work in acoustics at home or with my friends to write, working on voice or type in beef after eating!
I was hoping that it can also have an interest in concert once connected (which is not so obvious with a lot of acoustic basses I tried in this price range), and here I am fulfilled: a true musical identity, a grain that contrasts completely with my electric sound.
The only drawback is that it is not easy to have a hard houssse or a box the size of this instrument! more, attention to guitar stands: I have a dual stand Hercules, and position the pus high, low almost touching the ground!
I put 8 for the handicaps posed by the size.
OVERALL OPINION
It is a very recent purchase, and notice that hot I would not fail to competitive later. I bought this weekend 444 euros in a shop in Toulouse, but apparently there is not everywhere (we only see Cort, stagg, fender, ibanez). I was ready to embark on a cort in this price range, and when I tried the epiphone, all seemed clearer and more consistent with what I was looking for. I put 9 for a very good value for money.
Update Oct. 25: After repeated use and concert on my amp (Nemesis NC115E) still happy with the sound and playability Note a very big trend feedback so essential to tinker with a cardboard cover rosette (+ fixing patafix) as impossible to find one the size of the rosette.
