Taylor 714-CE

This is Taylor's 7 series cutaway Grand Auditorium bodied guitar. It has Indian Rosewood back and sides and a unique Western Red Cedar soundboard. It is also equipped with Taylor's expression system.

This guitar was purchased at a second hand guitar shop for $1300. I was looking for an acoustic, but I'm not a big fan of Taylors. The owner asked if I had ever played a seven series Taylor. I told him no but I had played just about every other series and had been disappointed with the sound and quality that came with the hefty price tag. This one changed my mind.

Taylors are usually set up very nicely from the factory but I was also swayed because this particular guitar had been further set up by a pro guitar tech. It was much more responsive than other Taylor's I had played due to the Western Red Cedar top instead of Taylor's usual low quality Sitka Spruce. Bass was not weak nor overwhelming. The highs were very clear and snappy. The quality of the wood is great, the grain is very tight and straight. I know it doesn't have anything to do with sound and playability, but the guitar is beautiful with the darker grain soundboard. This was a used guitar so it doesn't have the modern expression system, it has the fishman electronics.

The only gripe I have about the guitar doesn't pertain to mine because I bought it used. The retail price for a new one of these is nearly $4,000 and the street price is nearly $3000. This is just too much for this guitar.

As stated before, the material including the quality of wood is superb, very straight and tight grain. The tuners and hardware are quality as well. The hard case that is provided will keep the guitar safe.

Don't let the price scare you, there is no reason to buy this guitar new. Used guitars always sound better anyway. Acoustics are one of those things that just get better with age. If you can find a nice used one for $1500 or less, you won't be disappointed.

Well, i had just gone to the gun store to try out a pistol i wanted to buy. On the way back i stopped at a large guitar store that i liked to go to(The Guitar Center, in Oklahoma City.). I went in to the "Holy" humitity controled room and started to try out all of the Martins, Taylors, and a few Tacomas. After trying them all out the one that i thought was the best looking and had a good balance in sound was the Taylor 714-CE. As i was in a dream at this point (And this guitar was way out of my price range retailing at $3500) i jokingly asked how much. The guy told me $3200 but said that he had one out front going for $800 with a "scratch" on it. I am imagining a huge gap in it that has...…

The guy told me $3200 but said that he had one out front going for $800 with a "scratch" on it. I am imagining a huge gap in it that has ruined the guitar, but when i saw it, there was a small 2mm long scratch right by the cutaway. A DREAM COME TRUE! i was there at 4 am the next morning to buy it at the memorial day sale, and i got it despite the line (i was the first one!)

It also had a 3 peice back and exceptionaly dark rosewood, a beautiful guitar. The sound it balanced well, with a great base sound (The way i like it.). The only guitar that i have heard that was better base is my friends Breedlove (Great guitars also.).

The small scratch, im not complaining for $800!

It's a Taylor... enough said.

I cannot begin to praise the wonders of this guitar, despite the great sound of the fishman prefix stereo blender. If u are thinking of getting this guitar, i encourage you to get it. If you don't believe my when i tell you this is one of the best guitars in the world (im not kidding.), the next time your at a guitar store, try out a 714-CE and see what i mean

Taylor 714CE

Taylor 714cePublished on 12/01/03 at 15:00
I travel and spent nearly a year looking at, mostly, Taylor guitars at over 20 guitar stores across the US. Finally found my dream guitar at Tobias Music in Downers Grove, IL (Chicago area). I paid $2,150 for my Taylor 714 CE.

The tone and playability of this instrument are incredible. The indian rosewood back/sides give nice bass response while cedar top adds warmth.

As part of the setup, the guitar shop shortened the height of bridge too low which improved action but increased fret buzz. This was corrected with a new bridge.

Construction, fit and finish of guitar is flawless. Try running your hand down the side of the neck/fretboard and notice how nicely finished the fret...…

Very happy with my investment. This guitar is well worth the money.

SOUNDS

10/10
I was looking for a hot electro acoustic sound that is why I needed the rosewood back and sides
this guitar is perfect whatever the purpose the sound is well balanced hot captivating ...
once connected the preamp does not distort the sound, he returns to the same no need to embellish or add to, it's just perfect ...
I plug it into a small recording studio with stereo speakers ... it's great!

OVERALL OPINION

overall rating 10/10 as aesthetically (I was, however, left to take a light wood guitar ... but I fell for its v = sunburst varnish!)
acoustically you really feel you are playing on a high end guitar sound just perfect! on the preamp is also the height!
IF YOU CAN DARK this guitar worth every penny!
