Roland CDX-1 Disk Lab

Roland CDX-1Published on 07/17/04 at 15:00
I paid 600 dollars on ebay for the unit. I bought it because it is an all in one machine that I could afford.

the effects are great- large variety with quality sound
it is an easy machine to use
the sound quality is very exceptable

it is very sensative to the types of cdrw disks you use,
my drive broke
it does not allow me to do all the things I want
it comes with a very small amount of memory-an upgrade is needed
it cant handle too much things going on at once

the unit's disk drive broke
the unit is too sensitive
i would not recommend this product

do not buy this machine, there are far better alternative that are more reliable and are capable of doing more

Roland CDX-1 DiscLab

I had been reading about this product and wanting it for a year or more. It went on sale at Musician's Friend for $799 so my wife bought it for me as a Christmas gift.

I like the ease of use and the fact that I can record to CD-RW so that I can master it, or straight to a CD-R. I also love the on-board effects. They are perfect for plugging my guitar directly into the unit, thus eliminating amp noise.

My only disappointments with this machine are that I sometimes run out of disc space before completing my tracks. It would be better with a hard drive for storing tracks.

It is slow to locate when rewinding or fast forwarding.

It is slow to locate when rewinding or fast forwarding.

The unit is well-built and as rugged as anyone would need it to be. It has a nice, clean appearance as well.

For the type of music I am composing and recording, this unit is just what I need. I don't have to be a rocket scientist to be able to use it either.

UTILIZATION

The CDX-1 is a workstation dun new type combining a multitrack recorder, a sampler of phrases and a CD burner. It allows an entire Next-Generation of musicians, composers and DJs eager to CD, dchantillonner, reload or combine grooves prfrs, CRER original music via multi-section, add effects, then burn the whole on recordable CD. It has never t simpler and more convenient to make music CD.

SOUNDS

The converters are simple, normal is Roland (gnraliste). The effects are well trs conus same on returning a guitar or bass line. And dynamics is still acceptable for this price.

OVERALL OPINION

With the price of second-hand market today is the best multitrack numriques. Compare with a Korg or a Yamaha .... A word!

UTILIZATION

I used this for some time multitrack and I had some big surprises:
First, there is no hard drive, which means that the CDX-1 works with an internal memory.
When the sound is made, you must register all 2 tracks on the mastering and then burn the CD. Until the nothing abnormal. on the other hand ... surprise ... I compose songs some of which are long enough (about 10 min.), And the camera's internal memory can not accept that about 7 min 30! No one had explained to me this time and no "dtail" is prcis the manual.
It is therefore impossible to burn tracks longer than the last. We must know!

Then you have frquemment "optimize" CDR-W. Indeed, the data recording are all guards in memory (so you can use the function "undo") on the CDR-W. But after a while the CD is full. So running the procedure "optimize" for free instead. This also means that it is now possible to use the "Undo"!
Finally, it is true that a place Pipelines Limited to add a strip 128 SDRAM memory, but he does not find product with prcises on compltes CHARACTERISTICS the user manual!
In addition, it appears that this memory supplmentaire only works for functions sampler.
I e-mailed the hotline Roland for this problem, but I've never had rponses!
Finally, I would say the maneuvers on the CDR-W trs are long, and it takes patience to do some opration. (About 2 3 minutes to "optimize", more than 10 minutes format a CDR-W !!!).
It is becoming impossible to perform edits on the tracks (not copy, delete, dplacement etc ...)
For part Sampler, I've never used because I sold quickly trs!

SOUNDS

Otherwise, the sound is not bad ... except the breath in the effects of modlisation Amp (COSM).
Avoid a Manir gnrale the "bounce" (recording several tracks for free on two of the square), the resulting dernire, I think a loss of quality of origin.

OVERALL OPINION

I think though it is a World Premire, not your exact t the ESPR. The proof is that the CDX-1 is no longer in the catalog APRS only 2 years old and no similar product has not replaced. A German site's "Brad" 500 euros a year dernire!
So it is now possible to buy a new one.
I think to use "classic" is that guitar-bass-drums-vocals and songs of 3 4 min with a few samples, it is a device that can actually be useful, condition of be patient (especially in the handling of the CDR-W!). I sold mine a guy who made the music, the problem of course prvenant STATEMENTS above, and for him, this is perfect (I must say that I do not really him sold expensive!). Anyway, I think it is to opt for the INTERESTED BR1180CD (10 tracks with 20 GB hard drive!) Which may be nine to around 8 or 900 Euros.
What may tip the balance, it would be to use the sampler hypothse ... for the rest ...!
And if your finances permit you, go and see the Korg D1600 MK2, or if you Fidler your brand, the new Roland (Boss and it's the same!) BR1600CD ...
See for yourself.
