Yamaha DX7
The Yamaha DX7 is a frequency modulation based digital synthesizer. The keyboard spans about four and a half octaves and has both pitch and modulation wheels. It has 1/4 inch outputs and it also has MIDI connections. In addition, this synth is fully polyphonic.

UTILIZATION

The configuration of the Yamaha DX7 can definitely take some getting used to, as there are a lot of different things you can do with this. It both has preset sounds and has the ability to store your own sounds as well. It is easy to toggle between all types of sounds, but will take a little while to understand all the ins and outs of this keyboard. The manual for the Yamaha DX7 is pretty complete and is definitely good to have around while you are trying to learn this powerful instrument.

SOUNDS

The sounds on the Yamaha DX7 are pretty varied, but all have a similar recognizable sound about it. It definitely sounds like the time period in which it came from, which is the 1980s. It is great for dance and pop music, and if you want to get creative you can definitely use it for all types of instruments. The feel of the keyboard is nice and it is very easy to play. The pitch and modulation wheels, and other parameters provide for almost endless possible sounds with this keyboard. Overall, an extremely unique instrument that is a great tool for a wide variety of applications.

OVERALL OPINION

I've been using the Yamaha DX7 synth for about three years and it is easy to see why it has become a classic. Surprisingly, these are pretty easy to find and aren't really that expensive. So if you are a fan of the sounds on this, it is a pretty easy pick up and is great to have around for both recording and live shows. Overall, the Yamaha DX7 is a unique instrument that definitely holds a place in the history of synthesizers.

Yamaha DX7
It has pretty good features considering the age of this classic. Velocity and aftertouch. Breath control, portamento, sustain and modulation inputs as well. Not bad. 16 voices, 6 operator FM, 5 octave keyboard and it holds 32 patches. There's a million patches floating around the net which you can send to your dx7 through midi.

Price paid

$180

UTILIZATION

Definitely not the easiest synth to use or program. But with patience and a little knowledge in FM synthesis you'll be creating patches like there's no tomorrow. If you're looking for a synth that's not boring this is it!

SOUNDS

The sound is good for those gritty basslines or weird bell type sounds or just flat out weird! Basically you create the sound you wanna hear just don't expect to replicate anything realistic.

OVERALL OPINION

Tough? Hell yes this thing weighs a ton. The membrane buttons wear through after heavy use but they'll still work.

I'll always love this synth just because of how deep it is. Sure its digital but then again it is the best selling synth of all time and many great hits we're made with it. Then again I did grow up in the 80's that might explain my connection!

I love digital synths. I am an industrial musician in a project called SCAB, my name is wrat. I wouldn't use anything else!

Price paid

$400

UTILIZATION

May be difficult for beginners, but I can slide across it.

Nearly 20 years and hasn't failed me yet!

SOUNDS

I love programming these babies. If you have the first model they are 20 years old, that is pretty vintage baby. It will be as popular as analog someday. Once it fades.

OVERALL OPINION

I use it on everything. I love fm synthesis. But, I am attracted to the dark noise covering complex melody spectrum of music. May not be suitable for Pop, Some forms of Electronic, R&B and of course folk. [scab] [nuthouse] sincerely, wrat

Yamaha DX7
For being released in teh early 80s, this synth is by far and away one of the best of its era. Great sounds, but there are 10,000+ library files online to go through to find what you're looking for. I've had the best success in making or altering existing patches rather than using old ones. If you're doing 80s styled music, this is essential.

Price paid

$300 (used)

UTILIZATION

THe interface is difficult to get used to. Programming this requires patience and the ability to read very thick manuals. It's all algorithm based, so fun with math. It's great for either overly digital sounds or pads. If you want to sound like Orbital, this is your synth.

SOUNDS

Sounds a bit nasally, but after running it through some standard effects, it sounds beautiful (eq, reverb). Does not have effects built in.

OVERALL OPINION

Rugged piece of gear. Heavy (almost 40 lbs) but it's a good solid casing around the machine, the keys can take a pretty good beating (live).A wonderful online community around the instrument that covers my tech support needs

I love my DX7. Don't take it away. Please.

Yamaha DX7
All is said

UTILIZATION

Editing sounds with, for example, MidiQuest, it's easy! Biensure without soft and without aid it is much less fun ...

SOUNDS

FM sounds, love it or hate it. Too often considered cold, metal, slap, but she had a good editor and patience can get beautiful tablecloths and almost trippy soft and warm "pads", not just the sound of bells or low 80s typed. The DX7 can even approach the grain called "analog" machines in the late 70's for a few leads or bass sounds like. At the time (80/90) was categorized for particular types of sounds and used in a certain style of music but now with soft publishers we discover that this synth has the belly and that can we get unexpected things!

OVERALL OPINION

Just a little personal accuracy, many people regret the absence of internal effects on the DX7, for my part I think it is an advantage as it can add any conceivable effects with a multi-quality effects ("Lexicon" eg). For the following versions (DX7 IID / FD) is dependent on what gives us the machine and with a lesser quality deal with various multi-effects racks.
A good chorus and a good reverb plastered DX7 MKI and it is pure bliss! Oh I forgot, this synth is virtually indestructible ...

We will come back on this, refer to other opinions:)

UTILIZATION

When you have an FM synth, think FM! We must spend a lot of time on the beast to understand the philosophy of programming! It is very often the black people against me comes out this synth. But with a little practice, it's cake!
And if you formatted analog, there is DX Manager on PC, or if you're retro (like me), you must present the Yamaha CX5 with the cartridge to edit the sounds of the DX7 graphics! (That said, good luck to find it: s)
It's true he should have been a little more ergonomic ... but hey!

Otherwise, I use it also master MIDI keyboard. No complaints!

SOUNDS

I do not use the usual basic patches, but those of the DX7 are just beautiful!
Really top for: electric piano, bass and groundwater endless!

Even we are surprised by fiddling to fall on its large current electro.

The aftertouch is gorgeous. Velocity as well, unless the keyboard is connected by noon. I think I really have to type like a deaf man to get me to the max. (I probably set too badly: D).

OVERALL OPINION

Indestructible! He saw all the colors and it is always at his post! I really carries everywhere. (But really any color water, soda, cold, hot). No I do not mistreat it happened either in concert or was an accident ... :)

Difficult to tame, but once that is done, this synth does everything melt! The sounds are still relevant!
Put the DX Manager or CX5 complement and voila!

Yamaha DX7
Very well built and very reliable!
Mine is equipped with the card Supermax tranfigure possibilities of the synth!
512 papers and more.

UTILIZATION

I will not repeat what has been said for over 20 years, but recently having a Motif ES Rack, and although I find the DX7 easier to program!!

SOUNDS

Everyone knows at least one of the DX7 ?????????
Mine will soon be 25 years and I still program it with a small chorus and a nice reverb behind, I can assure you that the DX7 is capable of delivering great sound!
This keyboard is expressive enough to live music, it fits beautifully in a mix.
In terms of sound, it provides the bass sounds, electric pianos, of course, we can get out of the water fun, the superb percussion (ah the famous bells !!!!), the synth sounds interessant and widely usable.

OVERALL OPINION

Too long and error, we confronted the DX7 with analog synthesizers, yet they complement each other wonderfully in their fields!
25 years spent with him soon, he saw other synths arrived, I never found him "has been", it is always essential.
Reliability at the top, supermax great card, the plug-in today ???????
I keep my DX is the original!

Yamaha DX7
It has no output Stros. He has only 1 mono audio output. To play with headphones
it's less fun, but to live is nickel. For the record too. It's more
simple to mix a mono signal that stro.
Polyphony sufficient. Anyway on this machine, the polyphony limit involved in sound character.
Top up and your DX7 has less charm. Convertos same for 12 bits. It colors the sound so
quite INTERESTED (Submitted functionality in non-FM7).

UTILIZATION

Configuration very simple.
Manuel? Not read.

SOUNDS

I love the FM. This is my 3rd FM synth after the SY77 and FM7.
No effects, but all the better. Sounds like sound is. If we add the effects,
we will fall back into the sounds kitsch 90s. Berk.
Any ism, but really it's not the interest of the machine.
Very good speech.

OVERALL OPINION

I've had a few days. Owns and I tried many synths in the past.
The manufacturing quality is impressive. It is unbreakable. APRS 26 years, the mcanique
keyboard works great. No key hard. The touch is absolutely on homogne
the entire keyboard. This is the first time I see a synth too strong. Built like a tank!
On occasion, the report qualitprix is amazing.

Another dtail: I love the Native Instruments accumulators, but
play the sounds of the DX7 FM7 / 8 and play on a DX7, DEFINITIONS is not the same!
We could fall in love with a DX7, while falling in love with software
this is ridiculous. <img class="smiley" src="/images/audiofanzine/interface/smileys/icon_wink.gif" alt="" />

Yamaha DX7
See data sheet.

UTILIZATION

At first I thought this synth incronpréhensible.En fact it is.
But there is nothing to comprendre.Tous accessible.Il settings are simply set intuitively and disrupt the settings.
If we change the algorithm such as the changes the nature of sound, more or less brilliant,
more or less filtered, and all other functional settings.

We must hack. This technique is very complex synth but its use is intuitive.

SOUNDS

The sound is infinite and it can be very beautiful.
The Modulation wheel can make a hell of vibrato.
The sounds can range from a kind of cross between a very old 60's electronic piano
hybrid jazz guitar so hot to a kind of electronic cytare coupled with crystal-clear sound with the dulcimer.

We do not twisted effects, sound percussion bell but also the kind of bass sounds with great FM attack.

He rarely shows an effect of this synth notament copper in ground and it
beautiful.
The ideal is to connect behind a expendeur and stereo reverb and there is little to do stuff vangelis.

OVERALL OPINION

This synth is a real box of surprises and is very complementary to a good analog to
it will make the bass strings with the moog, and leads the genre saw.

The fm is the possibility to create complex sounds near the acoustic instruments
while it works with analog sounds simple.

Run to buy the DX7 is not expensive and it does not shake as disappointing products
yamaha motif ES current type gas plant with sounds not great instrumentals and less hot than Roland.
