No SM58 but still a very acceptable and usable vocal mic, especially live

Shure 14 APublished on 01/10/24 at 12:50
So this has been sitting in the back of my brain for a long time. I worked for 10 years in the rental dept of a local music shop and we had a few 14a mics in our collection. I liked them, they sounded nice, warm, clear and natural. Not up to SM58 quality but completely fine, especially if you know your way around a sound rig. A little more tweaking needed than a 58 but not much. Then Shure decided they wanted to use 58 and 57 in the name, marketing thing probably, so people would think it's just the baby brother of the SM series. Bad, BAD Shure lol. I wish they'd at least kept the 14A in production so people would have a choice, but no, in with the PG and out with the 14A. The problem, at least to my ears, was that the PG58 was very midrangey, pretty harsh, and we had to fight a lot more at the board to get it to sound even remotely nice, where as with the 14A, as I said, it was very easy.

Just my thoughts, and will be hunting down a few 14As for myself probably this summer.

Best wishes to all and keep rocking!!

Good microphone singing, better than most, worse than the best

OVERALL OPINION

This is a good vocal microphone, however, it remains below a trs Shure SM58 is a shame.
