Thread Twintrak Pro sounds dull and distorted

Always been doubted my recorded material using my Twintrak Pro. There's always something lofi with the sound and it becomes worse. Vocals sound dull and sybilant even with good Rode mike's.
Recording bass on the instrument input makes it more clear, dull sounding and slightly distorted. Even at low gain settlings and no eq and compressor.
Recording directly into my audio-interface gives a huge quality increase.

Anyone familiar with these problems or knows where to find schematics of this unit. I'm a qualified service technician, so not afraid to repair it myself.
Asking Focusrite for schematics or diagrams turned up with nothing.
