Epiphone Les Paul Standard
Published on 11/19/01 at 15:00This guitar was purchased for $499.00 at The String Shoppe in Columbus, OH. This was the second guitar I've purchased from them and they don't just take the thing off the wall and say "See ya!" They polished and dusted the body, put fretboard conditioner on, and tuned it. Great customer service.
This is my 4th Epiphone in the past year that I've purchased. I've started with a verrrry basic Gig Rig, went to a LP Special II, then a Les Paul 100, and now to the Les Paul Standard. Each one has been a huge leap up from the previous model (I now feel "worthy" to play this one!). It's about as close to a real honest to goodness Les Paul without spending an additional $1500.00. This model is Ebony with a set neck, creme binding, and chrome humbuckers. I've always been a sucker for Les Pauls, could be my interest in Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, ZZ Top, Kiss, etc. The guitarists in these bands all favor Les Pauls. The humbuckers really crank and from the weight of the guitar you can just tell it's well put together. It just feels solid slung around your neck!
Being Ebony the body shows fingerprints; but who cares! Sound and playability wise, this is a suh-weeet axe!
The construction on this guitar is flawless. The binding is perfect and the thing just flat out looks sharp. If only I could play as well as it looks! If you don't have an additional $1000.00, get this over the full fledged Gibson Les Paul. I've said this is the "last guitar" I'll need for awhile. We'll see how long that thinking lasts.
Lots of bang for the buck. A well made guitar that sounds excellent and plays well.

The main thing that i like about my LP is the tone and the feel of the guitar. It is quite heavy and when its strpped to you, you can tell the difference from fenders straight away!!! It feels like you have got alot more for your money and at 370 i feel like ive ripped epiphone off!!!! It is also great with effects it has heavy distortion and also adds a nice tone to any chorus and reverb effects. and the sunburst finnish is to die for!!

It is built perfectly, there are no inperfections in my LP, and the design of these guitars screem out class, where as the fenders always look cheap and flimsy.
I would recommend to everyone to buy this guitar, i had a les paul studio and i loved that until i had it signed by noel gallagher from oasis so i had to buy a new one so i didnt reck it!!! but instead i bought the standard and the difference is fuckin astoundin!!! but i would give the studio 5 out of 5 also. in my ratings the LP standard should be at least a 15

Published on 09/08/01 at 15:00I was looking for a new guitar. I wanted something that would play well and sound professional. At first I was looking for an Epiphone Les Paul Black Beauty but it was modeled after the earlier Les Pauls which had a thick neck which did not allow easy playability. I was kind of disappointed. Then I found a Epiphone Les Paul Standard with an Ebony finish. I purchased it at Peeler Music in Toledo, Ohio for $595 with a hardshell case. List price for the guitar is $820.

This guitar is amazing. It sounds great with or without distortion and is very easy to play with it's slim tapered neck. I have four guitars, and the Les Paul is definitely the best. It has the no tremolo system which makes string changing very easy. I got mine with the Black Ebony finish which in my opinion is nicer looking than the available honeyburst or cherry sunbusrt, which are a bit more expensive, but not much. If you are trying to decide between getting an Epiphone Les Paul or a Gibson I would suggest you get the Epiphone. I have played both and I think they are equally good. The only major difference is that the Epiphone costs a lot less. I know this because when I went to get a new guitar I tried out some Gibsons and I didn't like them any better than the Epiphones. Epiphone guitars are all made by Gibson. My Epiphone even says Gibson on it. It was very well constructed. I like how easy it is to play fast leads on it.
There is absolutely nothing that I do not like about this guitar. Some people don't care for the no tremelo system but I don't see why. The only reason for it is if you use a whammy bar all of the time which most people don't. Second of all, like I said earlier it is easier to string and it doesn't take you long at all to get use to the different bridge when your palm muting which also wouldn't really matter much because most people don't do that much palm muting.
It is very well constructed. It mahogany body, and neck and a 22-fret rosewood fingerboard. Also as I have said earlier the slim taper neck allows easy playability.
The bottom line is the Epiphone Les Paul standard is a great sounding guitar for a good price.

The playability was beyond ridiculous. I have never nailed any licks faster than I did on this Les Paul. At first I was worried due to the fact that it wasn't made here, but reviews I've read made me try it out. I loved it, like i said the fretboard is set for speed. So is the action, and I didn't have any overgripping problems on and open D chord like I do on my SG. I think 3rd string is set better on here.

Good, for what I've done now. The finish is purple flake, which i believe isn't on any Les Pauls, Gibson or Epiphone anymore.... I like the bulky feeling on the neck. It helped speed wise. It is all put together well enough.
Buy this, not a true Gibson unless you're rich. I love it and I even have a Gibson. Change the pickups if you are picky.

Published on 07/08/01 at 15:00I bought this guitar at peeler music in toledo, ohio for $525. I decided to get an Epiphone after playing both gibsons and Epiphones and discovering that the Epiphones are almost as good or in some cases better than many Gibsons and are a fraction of the price.
I like the color of my new les paul. It is an Ebony. You can also get it in sunburst, but I prefer black. I love it's sound and how it feels. The neck is not to thick like some of the other les pauls.
I can't really think of any problems with it.

It was made in korea, where many well constructed guitars are made, and then set-up and inspected by the Epiphone company in the USA.
It feels good, looks good, and sounds good.

Published on 06/26/01 at 15:00My beginner Godin Electric was cool, but was satisfying the need for a deep, hearty tone that could warm up your very soul. I wanted something with some more depth to it, but didn't know if the Les Paul would be too much beef, and too much money. I got it used for about $1450, quite a steal as it was owned but not really used by the previous owner.
Les Paul's deliver the traditional warm, full, and long-sustaining sound. No complaints about the weight of the guitar because with a nice warm tube amp it delivers all the warmth I need. My fears of too much beef were calmed by simply turning down the gain and allowing the distortion to just give the sound depth. Excellent for those like myself who want warmth and rhythm from an electric, not just a whining power solo.
Les Paul's are a little chunky and not as smooth to play as, say, a Paul Reed Smith. Still needs some fretwork too. Not sure if that is a problem with LP's.
Well made, with all the quirks of a Les Paul. High quality.
Absolutely. Solid guitars.
Les Paul's are a good buy, an investment. They will go up in value, and provide the warmth and depth of tone you can't find in a Stratocaster or other single/double-coil guitars.

I love the beautiful shiny finish. The les paul gold logo and the overall classic real gibson tone and feel. neck is nice but had some glue residue on a fret. I am not rich so this guitar was a godsend! Also the neck is set and not bolt-on. the crafmanship in this guitar is stunning!! I will go onstage anywhere anytime and show the turkeys what real tone sounds like! Ill probably get a duncan hot pickup for the neck position. This axe through a crate vintage club tube amp is the real deal.
I wish guitar had real gibson kluson tuners like the old standards instead of epi knock-offs. only complaint here!
A#1 quality and tone for you buck! Very solid axe.
I am still shocked that I came across such a steal today. considering that lefthanded axes usually run you more than rightys!

While I was searching for a Fender Strat, this Les Paul was found gleaming in a corner. After playing it for a while I had to have it. Good fretboard feel. Great classic sound that matches the more expensive Gibson models. Even with the classic pickups the distortion crunched with the best of them! Oh...and the finish....very nice.
The bridge sticks up high from the surface of the guitar making it difficult to play if you are not used to it. It's just as heavy as the Gibson Les Pauls. I thought it was very well made. If you look very close at both Gibson and Epiphone guitars you will see that Gibson uses AAA top grade woods. Epiphone uses a lower grade but is still good quality. If you want a Strat there's nothing wrong with that but give the Epiphone Les Paul a try.
If you want a Gibson Les Paul, again give the Epiphone a try. In my opinion it plays just as well at the fraction of the price.

Not really, but hey, it's a Les Paul. There is no access to acute bevel.
- Ergonomics is it good (in terms of shape, weight ...)?
The form that scrupulously respects its big sister Gibson, to me is the most beautiful guitars ...
on the other hand, in weight, well it's a Les Paul too, and when it was on the shoulder for 5 hours in rehearsal ', better have a good well padded strap. 8 KG the Beast, it is not anything ...
- Gets it easy to sound good? ...
With the original e-mail, not really ... The distortion is not defined, and it is rough, lack of energy. Advice, this type of guitar to the violin that takes the road, we must completely replace the electronics. That's what I did to Di Marzio pickups at the time, and the sound quality was multiplied by 10.

Sounds hot, with lots of sustain.

With the original pickups, it's still pretty average.
It made me happy for a few years, because I had little perspective on the issue of sound, but it is becoming more demanding over time, and after this course I found it necessary to replace by very good microphones to continue my journey with this instrument.
OVERALL OPINION
- How long have you use it?
I bought it new in 1995 (3650 CHF), I sold this year to make me my own Les Paul.

- How would you rate the quality / price?
The value for money is good. It is in the midrange. Even by changing the pickups, electronics and mechanics, it remains well below the price of a Gibson.
- With experience, you do again this choice? ...
Yes, I had a great time with this guitar. I improved level at all its faults, and I took a lot of fun to play then.
