Red Bear MK120

Red Bear MK 120Published on 12/14/03 at 15:00
Ebay purchase for $275. I remeber playing through one in the early 90's and really liked the tone.

The simplisticity of design, the low-end, and it's untouchable distortion. I also like the lack of extras such as reverb, chorus and items that are better served through pedals.

One solvable problem, is the lack of clearity. Although this amp created huge noise and great rock tone, it never seemed to capture the tightness you would associate with the jcm900. That can be corrected with the purchase of a 6cg7 or another 6volt pre-amp tube. You can not use the standard 12ax7 since it's configured different and is a 12volt tube. I kept the other 2 pre-amp tubes-the standard 6n2p(s).

Contstruction is solid. Nothing fancy just solid wood enclosure and two simple grills.

I would recommend this amp to anyone even if you don't change out one pre-amp tube, the price and decible level is more than you could need.

120W all-tube amp
Gain control, volume, bass, mid, treble, presence of + boost "sentivity"
Possibility of installing a footswitch
Out 4, 8 and 16ohms.

UTILIZATION

Config super simple, no frills or manual, you get a great sound right away

SOUNDS

Perfect for all that is rock, punk, hardcore punk, metal, stoner, what big sound.
I can not imagine someone doing jazz unless it plays in Dilinger Escape Plan.
Perfect for playing with a Gibson.

Beware though at low setting, do not abuse it too because it has what it takes in reserve.

OVERALL OPINION

I use it since 2007 and before a friend of mine used it, we're both very happy.

I tried many other models before buying it but I found one that had the greatest identity.
For a head handmade, the price is super interesting, super quality / price ratio.
