SOUNDS

OVERALL OPINION

Fully satisfied because it is exactly what I wanted.
I do not use it as a sound card but as mixer.
So I can work in the studio or stage config (group) by using multiple outputs of my soundcard (Konnekt 24D) assigned to different tracks and finally listen all at the same time.
The sound quality is by appointment (no loss) even if we may regret a loss of earnings according to the connectors used. This will require a little up the volume of the amp.
Weakness: no MIDI, it's personal I do not mind, my sound card supports it but take it into account, it can be an unpleasant surprise for some.
The two modules can not be a multitude of cables in the feet.
The knobs are good bills and preamp as good as those of FA-101 for those who know.
The ergonomics are very good, quick start, the set weighs about 4 kilos, like a little treat. Depending on your config it will be unnecessary or essential, we must think about (as with any purchase of equipment home studio).

To change the frequency in this case, disconnect the USB cable, change the frequency on the console, and turn off / turn on the console. Any other frequency as 44.1, 48 and 96KHz is not recognized at all.

Drivers USB ASIO 2 and WDM / KS (Windows only). Note that during my tests, Live 6 has refused to use the ASIO driver. However, I use the machine in Sonar WDM / KS (ASIO is more limited in the choice of the extent of latency).

The LED bargraph seems accurate and well calibrated (Test with a 1000HZ to 0dB). It allows you to view alternatively the output level, entry level USB (software release) or the entry level pre fader tracks 1 to 12.

UTILIZATION

Setup is simple, relatively intuitive. The LCD provides extensive information and allows you to set many parameters. Backup / restoration of scenes (the parameters of any console) is valuable and easy. The console is not powered, it should, however, put the knobs in the middle position before reloading stage.

The manual is brief, in English. In the version I received, it is added to a printed manual in a hurry to describe the new features in the 2.0 update. The CD-ROM (for installing the USB driver) in my version is shipped with version 1.0. So, missing configuration files described in the addendum 2.0 it must be downloaded from the Edirol site. (This being said, of course, nowhere)

SOUNDS

Routing is fully digital. The potentiometers are piloting digital circuits, which induces a functioning strange at first.

I have not tested the integrated pre amps.

The effects are interesting, especially for use in decision-computer voice, or live for singing. The effects are not routed to the USB, the / the singer / effects may benefit from listening more enjoyable without them being recorded.

The output level seems a little feeble, there is no switch -10 / +4 dB. I had many problems with breath sounds and parasites, all were due to the location of the module I / O, very sensitive to external disturbances (sector, WiFi, GSM, etc. ...). Otherwise, all volumes fully seat (what a strange idea!), The background noise is very acceptable or impossible to hear depending on the quality of listening.

OVERALL OPINION

I have a toy for a week. It's a beautiful toy, practical and well thought out, but not perfect like all the toys.

This is an original and unjustly ignored, at very low cost, making it valuable services such as live in home studio. It combines a live stand-alone mixer with 16 inputs, a USB sound card 24/96 to 18 / 2 out, a control surface feature rich (but not jog / shuttle or faders) and a modular architecture significantly ( I / O module and remote / separate table).

I bought it as a sound card / control surface dedicated to the home studio in Sonar.

The value for money is very good, - € 400 for as many features, it had to be done. The module and the console seem hefty, but when their reliability over time, I obviously can not speak. Of course, this lack of energy, routing is quite complex (some I / O can be used differently depending on their needs), but in the end, it's a very nice toy that offers many opportunities to record / mix multiple sources, and this in a very small space.

After long hesitation between several solutions much more expensive, I flashed on the toy side which is ultimately very well to my expectations and needs. Being allergic to viscerally ProTools and Steinberg, it's good, really it is a device dedicated to Sonar.

It is not my first sound card (far from it), but this is my first console digital home. And to think I almost redeem the units MOTU 828 for a studio equipped with Protools HD, I would have bitten your fingers!
