Pultec MEQ-5Published on 07/07/09 at 12:02
The Pultec MEQ-5 is a three band equalizer in the form of a rack mountable piece of gear.  I'm not exactly sure what types of connections it has in the back as the one I have used is pre-racked in the studio.  It is an analog unit and will take up two rack spaces.

UTILIZATION

The make up of the Pultec MEQ-5 is really easy to follow and even those with not much experience with EQ should be able to understand this as long as they understand what an EQ does.  The unit has three bands, each one with a switch to choose the frequency and a knob for the gain of that frequency.  Each band has a set number of frequencies to choose from, but for basic EQing this will work great as it covers...…

UTILIZATION

The make up of the Pultec MEQ-5 is really easy to follow and even those with not much experience with EQ should be able to understand this as long as they understand what an EQ does.  The unit has three bands, each one with a switch to choose the frequency and a knob for the gain of that frequency.  Each band has a set number of frequencies to choose from, but for basic EQing this will work great as it covers pretty much the whole frequency spectrum.  I've never had any problems using this and for this reason a manual isn't necessary.

SOUND QUALITY

The sound of the Pultec MEQ-5 is outstanding as it won't change your sound at all other than the alterations that you choose to make and it will do so quite cleanly.  It is useful for pretty much any type of application as I've used it on everything from drums to vocals to all sorts of guitars and have always been happy with the results.  The basic make up makes it easy to zero in on the sound you want and allows you total control over your tone.

OVERALL OPINION

I've only used the Pultec MEQ-5 a number of times as I don't have access to one on a regular basis, but for the times that I've been able to use it I've been thoroughly excited and happy with the results.  Since this is an old piece of gear and is no longer made, the price is extremely high and would only recommend seeking one out if you are a professional with some dough to spend.  The Pultec MEQ-5 is a classic piece of gear and can now be found in a plug-in which is probably a lot more practical for most of us!
